Thanks to all who posted here for your kind replies.  He's off for a British passsport next week; and for his 'Merkin' Consular Notification, not until the next available interview date at the end of September.  Cheeeesh.  It's my 2nd child born abroad, and last time it was just an amble down to the embassy whenever you took the notion and fill out some forms.  Are those guvvies REALLY that busy now?

I am using the massively helpful article written by Marlespo, "Reporting a Birth Abroad & Child's First Passport", which is at http://www.talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=5026.msg50110#msg50110  It's a must read...
