No Outlook on Windows 7!?
« on: December 10, 2009, 04:57:13 PM »
Just got my new Dell laptop, running Windows 7, and so far I am NOT impressed!

I tried to set up Outlook to run my email last night, only to find that Windows 7 doesnt support it, and you've got to use Windows Live Mail.

Okay, whatever   ::) ... but I have tried several times to link my existing Virgin Media email account (currently running on Outlook on my old laptop) to the new Windows Live Mail, and am having no luck.

Anyone have any advice?

Hi there,

Whilst I've got no direct experience with Windows 7 as yet, I'll try answer as best I can.

Sounds like you may have an older version of Outlook which the Vista/Windows7 code doesn't support. The easiest thing would be to upgrade to Office 2003 or 2007, which are supported to run under Windows 7. That way, you'll be able to setup your accounts as per the setup email accounts wizard and/or menu options.

Windows Live Mail is the replacement for what was Outlook Express, so essentially, you should be able to link up to protocols used by email providers that it supports. Virgin Media I have no knowleddge of either, but you'll need to check 'how' that was setup in your older Outlook (IMAP? or POP3?) and then see if the new Windows Live Mail offers the same setup option. It may be that virgin media have changed the way email is delivered to newer operating systems/versions of office outlook etc, although I doubt it.

A quick search reveals this website - have a quick look

I'd also put in a call to Virgin media tech support and ask them to walk you through setting up your email account to connect with Outlook.

Hope this helps a bit - Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I may have to call the Virgin tech team, because their website has been no use... nor has the Virgin Media user forum.  Someone on the forum said that the tech team refused to help them with this... but i will give it a try.

Thanks...

Maybe try Mozilla Thunderbird? We used that at my old job, and it worked well.

do I have to be using Mozilla in order to use Thunderbird?
I like using IE.

BTW, just called Virgin Media and they've advised they do not support Windows Live Mail so, just like the person on the forum said, refused to give any advice or instruction.

Mozilla isn't an operating system, it's an open source software company. They offer the Firefox browser and Thunderbird e-mail system as replacements for Internet Explorer and Outlooks Express respectively. They are free to download and run on Windows, Mac and Linux. They're great!

I'd have to go with the others and say give Thunderbird a whirl.

So i could still use IE as my browser, and use Thunderbird as my email... they're interchangeable?

Thunderbird is like Outlook Express, a program completely independent of your browser, so you can still use IE- though why you would want to I don't know! I much prefer Firefox.

Fear of the unknown, i guess!  ;)
I've never used anything else...

Thanks for your/everyone's input on this... I'm going out just now but will try Thunderbird when I have time.

In terms of use it's almost identical, so nothing complicated to figure out. The main difference is that favourites are called bookmarks. I find Firefox a bit more intuitive, and it's also more secure and less crash-prone than IE. I still use IE occasionally, as some website don't work as well of FF, but 99% of the time I use FF.

Different strokes, I guess. I tried Firefox for a few months, but ultimately decided I preferred IE so went back to it.

How old is your version of Outlook?

Quote
The following versions of Outlook are fully supported on Windows 7;

    * Outlook 2003
    * Outlook 2007
    * Outlook 2010 (when it gets released)

Previous versions

Any other version of Outlook is not supported on Windows 7. Although you could install it, any compatibility issue will not get fixed. For instance;

    * Outlook 2002/XP will run on Windows 7 but it has the same password remembering issues as when using it on Windows Vista.
    * Outlook 2000 cannot be installed in Internet Mail Only Mode (IMO Mode) and should always be installed in Corporate/Workgroup Mode (CW Mode) to prevent a wab.dll error.

I run Vista and Windows Mail set up fine to my blueyonder email account.
What issues are you getting?

Under Tools>Accounts
Highlight "MAIL" and select Properties

This is what I have set up by tab

General
In the mail account - "pop3.blueyonder.co.uk"
Name is the name you want your emails to show
e-mail address - youremailname@blueyonder.co.uk

Servers
Incoming mail server - POP3
Incomin mail (POP3) - pop3.blueyonder.co.uk
Outgoing mail (SMTP) - smtp.blueyonder.co.uk

email user  name - this is the one supplied by blueyonder - just letters and numbers....e.g ab014j2122
This is where you can also have different email accounts set up....so for example I set up an account for DW and it's that number then "-1" I think

Password - what you set up on your blueyonder server account

Hope that helps!
