Insurance for rental cars

Hi All,

Question about insurance for rental cars. When I lived in the US and wanted to rent a car, I would just charge the rental to my US-issued credit card and rely on the card company's included Collision Damage Waiver policy to protect me in the event of an accident. Visa, Amex, Mastercard all offer this coverage in the US, but it doesn't appear to be included with any UK-issued credit cards that I could find. What's the best and cheapest way to get covered for car rentals over here so you don't get hit with a big bill if there's any damage to the car?

Check with your auto insurance (assuming you have your own vehicle), they sometimes will cover you for rental cars as well.

Whenever I've hired in the UK I've taken the hire company's insurance and they normally have a 200-250ish quid excess as standard which didn't seem "huge" as such but I must admit I don't hire that much.

I'm constantly arranging rental cars for US business visitors at the major airports. Just about every car rental company here offers either total coverage or coverage with a small excess (deductible) and it's cheaper than what we pay in the US for the same coverage. It's also worth it, as many have managed to destroy tires, wheels, mirrors, etc
