When was the last time you spoke to an American?
« on: December 22, 2009, 12:21:18 AM »
When was the last time you spoke with an American/Canadian outside of your own family?  I have been in London five months and have only had one short exchange of words.  I was using an ATM a couple weeks ago and an American said to me "Can these machines be any slower?"  It really took me by surprise.  I hear Americans speaking most every week because my tube line has Heathrow on it.  But I never talk to them (because its the tube and that would be creepy).

It's been at least a year since I heard another American speaking other than on the phone with family. It was a nurse at the hospital who had been here for over 20 years and still sounded American

Over a year. Since I left the States. Not counting TV, of course  :)

Have you noticed Americans on British TV have these horrible, grating accents? It's not just that I'm no longer used to what we sound like -- I listen to streaming radio from the States all the time, and that doesn't sound wrong. It's like the only Yanks they'll let on TV over here have accents that could strip paint.

On the phone with sheateawholepie after I passed my driving test last Thursday, and I called my BFF in Texas last night for a bit. I talk to other Americans pretty frequently.

one of the barmen in my local is from New Jersey, so i talk to him at least twice a week.

Other than that, it would probably have been 2 weeks ago when we had a disgusting burger in Ketchup... both waitresses were North American of some description.

Must have been in April when I was across on holiday.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

In September when I went back to the States! I know that there is plenty of Americans out there but in my neck of the woods I seem to be the only one. I'll be in shock if and when I ever do run across one here in my little village or anywhere for that matter. They may just get a big ol' hug from a random stranger (me)!!  ;D

I work with an American woman. And have regular contact with a Canadian lady through work. And one of my friends from high school lives in London and I speak to him every couple of weeks (having lunch tomorrow!)

Daily.  My shop is on the same street as the offices of some big businesses like Shell and Penguin Books.  There seem to be quite a few Americans working for them.  Plus, living in London you run into Americans all the time--tourists AND expats.  That accent always grabs my attention, and (unfortunately) my husbands too.  'Look honey, it's your sister/brother!  Go talk to her/him!'  PITA.
