I think dual nationality should only be possible by being born into it.  US citizens who willfully naturalize as citizens of other countries should be forced to relinquish their US citizenship.  I wish the US government would crack down on this.

Why?

Tu seras mon unique projet.

Je t'aimais, je t'aime, et je t'aimerai.

The Supreme Court disagrees with you, JuniorMint, so I doubt that you'll see the government "crack down" on this any time soon.

Looking at it the other way too...

Let's suppose you are an American living in the UK with a dual national child and a British spouse. Then you decide to move to the US and live there. Your spouse is being taxed without the right to vote so they want to become a US citizen. Would you then try to force your spouse to renounce their British Citizenship as a matter of principle? I doubt it.

I think it has to do with the IRS. They don't want to end receiving taxes from citizens who move to another country.

Citizenship is a constitutionally protected right under the 14th amendment.  Although taxation is probably a good incentive to keep dual nationality a reality, it's not something the state can take away from you without you intending to give it up.

Sounds like you think dual citizenship is a bad thing. "Wilfully" is usually used in connection with criminal intent. Why do you feel that way?

No point in feeding the trolls. Juniormint is perfectly entitled to his/her opinion, but it takes certain nerve to post anti-dual citizenship comments on a UK/US board.

nerve

That's one word for it.  ;)

As long as I pay taxes in two countries, I want to vote in two counties. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought we'd settled that whole 'taxation without representation' issue a couple of hundred  years ago?

Why? Give me one good reason that doesn't involve overt nationalism or jingoism.

Most people will take dual citzenship for convenience when they are living in another country but still want to retain the right to return to their country of birth.
The UK government have expressed that they wish long term residents of the UK to become citizens, so in that instance most people on this board would then have to choose if we followed your line.
Also, becoming a citizen of the UK gives people the right to vote in elections, surely that's desirable that you have a voice in the country in which you live.

What are you implying, sir?  :)

UK... join it or leave it... (where have I heard that form of phrasing before?)

Is that so? Then we will have to alert the US authorities to your previous post so they can crack down on you!

Personally, I'll jump at the chance of British citizenship. If you have American citizenship, and British (E.U.) citizenship. The world is your oyster I think. Unfortunately, I have to wait awhile because I'm here on EEA rules.

Brilliant!

Junior Mint 2010 v Junior Mint 2008 on Dual citizenship!

It's like the debate between Gulliani 2009 v Gulliani 2001 on trying terrorists in NY that was shown on the Daily Show
