Best baggage allowance?

Hi everyone, any tips on what airlines have the most generous baggage allowances on transatlantic flights as of 2010? I've been noticing in my five years in London that the allowance is getting stricter and more expensive. I'm trying to figure out which airline to take back to the U.S. I want to move back soon and just take whatever I can on the plane.

Each airline is different, and recently most have changed their baggage policies. Above are the links to the airlines that I can think of flying to the US. Best to give them a read over.

The baggage allowance seems to stink...
One bag for US to UK (really come one now) At least with Delta/Air France I could not find anyone who still allowed two.

So I pay $50 for second bag
and $200 for 3rd

last week air canada still allowed two bags, but now they are down to 1.

I think it has changed since that bomb attempt. Curious thing I noticed when looking at BA's allowances- we are only allowed 1 now, but if you are coming from Nigeria (among other random places) you can have 2? The guy who caused this (in part) was Nigerian! Just an odd observation that they can still have 2 on their flights, but we are restricted!

Pretty sure it's unrelated. It was changed before the bomb attempt, but that was around the time it came into effect.

The new baggage restrictions DO suck though. I had to cram all my stuff into one suitcase this time. It was fine for the trip there, but I had so much stuff to bring back with me...

Not sure if this helps anyone but:

My husband is a Silver Elite on Continental (due to flying to the US so much during our engagement). Obviously, he flies less now, but as long as he got in 1 more flight before Feb he got to keep it for another year and since we went last month he did, yay. What this means is he's allowed 2 bags, as is anyone who books a flight during the same time! So since I booked my flights -with- his I was allowed 2 bags too!

Another thing to look out for, at least on Virgin, is the opportunity to upgrade to Premium Economy for not much money.  When we were making our reservations to go home at Christmas, we upgraded for $50 each -- and Premium Economy allows you 2 bags (23kg/50lbs) instead of just one in regular Economy.  So, for $100 total, we got better seats and an extra bag each -- well worth it for us!

I'm flying Alaska air to Dallas and then switching to American air to fly to Heathrow at the end of March. How does the baggage allowance work for that? Is it one bag? or two?

I am flying in May from the Isle of Man to Houston via Manchester and Heathrow.

The first leg of the trip IOM to MAN is with FLYBE (the crappiest of all crappy airlines!!)
and you are allowed 1 suitcase 20ks...and then BA I have an allowance of 2 bags at 23ks cause the main journey of my ticket is International.

BUT because I bought my ticket BEFORE BA lowered their allowance and because it was ticketed as a thru ticket all on one ticket FLYBE has to allow me the same luggage allowance that BA is...

So my point is if your ticket for all your journeys are on one ticket you "should" in theory be able to use the luggage allowance on the major journey of your ticket, the carrier with the largest amount allowance.

If they are all seperate tickets then the luggage allowance will fall back on the carrier with the least amount of luggage allowance as they will be the ones you will need to satisfy..as long as you can get your bags on with them...you are ok with the others..

Uggh!!! I know!!! Uggh!!  And their overhead lockers are awful - you can't even fit a rucksack in!!

depends when you bought your ticket...they changed the baggage allowance...I say chevk with whoever you check in with as that is who is "checking" your bags thru...

Best bags in the US - southwest too bad they dont do international..yesterday I flew with 2 carry ons and 3 suitcases all weighing 50lbs cost? $50 bucks!

If they bought their ticket before the luggage allowance changed the Airlines has to honour the allowance at the time of booking. Which is why I booked my BA tickets back in September..and unless their ticket is a "thru" ticket (all flights booked on one ticket) they won't be able to check their bags all the way from their departure Airport thru to their arrival Airport.

I was able to book FLYBE and BA on 1 ticket as they have an agreement..but only if it is on the same ticket...
