Retiree living questions
« on: January 10, 2010, 11:28:54 PM »
I'd like to move to the uk upon reaching retirement. Does the uk welcome us retirees?  I'll be earning about 2k$ per month and just want a small flat away from the city. Does the uk have subsidized flats for pensioners?  Any advice as to a good location. Ideally I want a small flat for me and a cat.

Unfortunately, the UK did away with its Retired Persons of Independent Means visa some time ago, and with only a 2k/month USD income and no intention of working, the UK doesn't have any visas that you would qualify for.  They would definitely not offer subsidised housing to a foreign pensioner.  The movies make it seem really easy to up and move to a different country, but the fact is that it's quite difficult.  Without a job, a huge amount of money to invest, or a UKC spouse, there's really no way for an American to settle here.

What historyenne said.

You need to be a UK/EU national to retire here unless you're married to a UK/EU national.
