Forwarding Express Scripts to UK?
« on: January 12, 2010, 10:35:37 PM »
Apologies if this has been asked before. I've been looking and I can't seem to find an answer to my question.

I leave on Sunday for 5 months in Northern Ireland as a Student Visitor in Belfast.  I am on two prescription medications in America: Aviane (birth control) which I just started two or three months ago after a hellish period of time on a different bc, as well as Bystolic for a heart condition.

I have arranged to have Express Scripts automatically send me three months at a time for my medication so I don't have to worry about getting it every single month while I'm abroad.

Express Scripts told me on the phone that they would send it directly to where I was going, but then once I started giving them the address, they said, "We can't ship overseas. You'll have to have a parent ship it to you from your house."  :-\\\\

1. I was not aware it'd be possible to "study abroad" while remaining in the country.  He claimed one minute that they could ship it to me "while abroad", but apparently once he realized "abroad" means not in America, he changed his tune.  This is fine, but it leads me to #2...

2. Is it legal for my parents to send me these pills in the mail?  I will have enough on me when I leave to last about a month, but once the Express Scripts are processed, I should be receiving 3 more months of it in the mail.  I don't want to get my parents (or myself) in trouble for sending/receiving prescriptions drugs in the post.  Even if I do have the prescription for them.

Has anyone else had any experience with having shipments of medications or Express Scripts, specifically, send to them in the UK?  I'd love to hear your experiences.  I'm worried about my drugs being delayed or getting into any kind of legal trouble.  Both of these drugs are not exactly high on the list of abused drugs, as they are birth control and beta-blockers, but I just want to be sure.

Cheers,
Brittany

I think it's a much safer bet to bring an entire 5 months' supply with you in your suitcase, frankly. Can you speak to your doctor and have him/her write out a prescription to last you the 5 months?

That's what I was going to suggest too.

When I told my UK GP that I was going to be studying abroad in the US for a year and wasn't sure about being able to get my prescription there, he wrote me out a prescription for a 12-month supply of my pill so I would have enough to last until I returned to the UK (which was great because it's free here and I would have had to pay for it in the US) :).

When I've done this, my insurance company has required me to pay for the full cost of the prescription for the time beyond three months and then apply for reimbursement retroactively for the time period beyond this.

Unfortunately,  my insurance company is VERY unreliable. I usually have to fight with them about my heart medicine being medically necessary when I do try to pick it up.  They are supposed to offer fully coverage, and I am covered under two policies, but this one is primary and is terrible.  Express Scripts was the only way I could get more than 1 month at a time out of them.
