Adult skate/dance or sport lessons?
« on: January 13, 2010, 11:43:46 AM »
I deplore going to the gym so I'm thinking of taking up either dance (most likely ballet as I used to do ballet) or figure skating (again, used to do figure skating.) I figure I might have better luck starting up with a good exercise regime if I don't grimace every time I remember that I need to go. I had wanted to drop a few more pounds I had gained from last year so I decided why not do something I enjoy?

Does anyone do a sport to keep in shape? Does anyone do 'adult' lessons for their particular sport? Does anyone, by chance, do dance or skating?

I used to do both ballet and figure skating when I was younger (ballet for 17 years and the occasional skating course between age 5 and 15) and have considered taking classes again as an adult, but haven't been able to fit it into my schedule (I work shifts and weekends and I'm about to go travelling and then move to a different city). I may consider it again after I've moved and started my new job though.

I know that our local ice rink offers both adult and children's group skating courses (30 minute lessons with about 15 people, lasting either 6 or 10 weeks... including free skate hire and you used to get a free 2-hour public skating session after the lesson too), but they're quite pricey from what I remember.

I'm not sure about adult ballet classes - I've thought about joining one, but I'm feeling rather inflexible and out of practice at the moment  :P. I also don't know what the standard would be like in an adult class (I used to attend the Bristol School of Dancing as a teenager, where they were pretty strict and you had to do everything perfectly or you were told off... I think I would feel out of place if it was an environment like that, but at the same time I wouldn't want to end up in a class of relative beginners).

rynn_aka_rae...I want to do the same thing! I deplore going to the gym and feeling like a lab rat running on a treadmill and lifting weights if it doesn't hurt I don't feel like it is doing anything (I know it does).

I just like to be active but having fun...Dance class would be a good one - I would love to do gymnastics but trying to find an adult class in the US is hard I doubt I will find one in my lil town in the UK.  Skating might be fun but I am sure I would hurt myself haha

All ideas are appreciated of what you find as I need some ideas as well ;-)
