Thanks for the reminder. Best get me some lemons!!

But what the heck is faschnacts?

I've never had anything but crepe style pancakes with lemon and sugar on pancake day.
Do other places do savoury ones as well or instead of?

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

OK... what's the deal with the English pancake day? Why is it called Shrove Tuesday? What are these pancakes like? Does anyone have a recipe to share? Just trying to figure out why there was a giant stand of lemon juice, Nutella, and strawberry sauce in the Co-Op.  :P I take it these are actually like crepes. Is that right?

yah, thin, kinda like crepes, slightly crisp on the edge, traditionally served with sugar and lemon juice, but nutella is good in them :D

Shrove Tuesday signifies the start of lent, you're supposed to use up all your milk, butter and eggs before lent starts (traditionally you'd not eat these things during the Lent fast)

For traditional, you can't beat Delia.

A simple recipe is:  4oz plain flour, pinch of salt, 1 egg and 1/2 pint of milk (UK measurements).  Place flour and salt in a bowl make a hollow in the middle and break the egg in.  Start to mix and blend in the milk slowly to make a smooth mixture.  Should be like single cream when completed.  Heat a pan v. hot and place a ladle full of mixture in, swirl around and cook one side, flip over and cook the other.  Serve rolled up with lemon and sugar (or whatever takes your fancy).  For some reason the first pancake is often rubbish but the rest are fine - seasoning the pan or something ???

I'm PA Dutch, we don't mess around with pancakes, we go straight for the doughnuts (Faschnacts) made with mashed potatoes.  Because everyone loves potatoes.   :D

My friend reminded me this morning it was Pancake Day and it totally cheered me up. I just love a day dedicated to the pancake.

I plan on having mine tonight with fried onions and mushrooms sauteed in some butter and creme fraiche. It's fatty and I love it.

I brought one of these (http://www.batterblaster.com/) back from AZ for my mate and I think he's going to use it today. They're not bad, considering they're pancakes in a can.
There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared:  twins.

I am debating about the recipe.  In my area we use yeast, but oy I don't feel like messing with yeast tonight after work.  Maybe if I get home early I will yeasty ones, but honestly I can't be bothered at this point so this one uses baking powder.  I can't vouch for the recipe though.  HA!!  Don't blame me.

Also, I would never, ever, ever put sugar on them.  Molasses seems suspect to me as well.

This would make A LOT I am going to cut the recipe in half at least, maybe by a third.

Also, they should be triangular, to remind us of the Holy Trinity while we are munching away, or square for the 4 Gospels.  Never round, never with a hole.    :D

2 ½ cups hot mashed potatoes
1 cup milk
3 beaten eggs
2 Tablespoons melted butter
2 cups sugar
2 Tablespoons baking powder
5 cups flour

Mix your wets together add the dry except flour. Mix flour in slowly.  You might not need all the flour.  Divide the dough in half. Roll ½ inch thick. Cut with a donut cutter or use a knife to cut into triangular shaped pieces. Deep fry in hot fat or oil until done. Serve with sugar or molasses.

Just finished a lunch of all kinds of sweet pancakes--DD loved it :)  Okay, so I'm not that healthy today, but oh it was good.  We had lemon and sugar, lime and sugar, nutella and banana, and kiwi and mango.  Nice.

Tonight we'll make the rest of the batter up and have some salmon, onion and mushrooms.  I like the creme fraiche idea.  Maybe we'll give that a go too.
