Driving theory and hazard perception
« on: February 22, 2010, 04:35:39 PM »
I have my test tomorrow afternoon and am now starting to freak out. I would say I am a decent driver in the US and know how look for hazard but a lot of the practice thing I am not getting them spot on. I guess it would help if the videos went so blurry but I don't know if that's how the test at the centre will be. I am not worried about he multiple choice since i have good study aids for that. I tried a couple hazard things and they all are videos with a few samples. I just would hate to pass all the theory stuff just to fail the hazards! Any suggestions on what might help? Or at least calm me down?

I was told by my instructor to take a breathe before I click the mouse.  His reasoning was that we actually spot a lot of the hazards EARLY and click too soon, thus missing out on the points.  I have no idea if that's correct, but it did help my scores.

He also suggested double clicking (like you would to open a document) as sometimes, again, you are just out of the ''zone'' where the points are awarded.  Be careful though as too much clicking can affect the score I think.

thanks, for the advice i plan on just clicking on every hazard that comes and click if they get even more hazardous just in case I missed it the first time. Then at least I will have got at least some points!

At least I have calmed down a little, I got some chocolate and a back rub from my hubby. I think being pregnant has not helped me worrying though. My hormones are so out of whack!

I took my theory test last April. I understand about being nervous. I bet you are like me in feeling the pressure of not passing. I wanted to pass because i did not want to pay the 34 pounds again. First, are you feeling good about the questions and have studied them? That is half the battle. Like you, i did have the cd with the hazards and i felt unsure. Take a good deep breath before you begin the hazard part. Look at screen and imagine that you are behind the wheel of the car. I am sure that you have been driving with a few years of experience right? Look ahead on the road and expect the unexpected. On this test i will tell you that you will be able to anticipate the hazards, such as someone on a bike swinging out, expect a pedestrian on the sidewalk to do something out of the ordinary. look for car door opening. Go by your years of experience that you have behind the wheel. You have the advantage over a 17 year old taking this test. I will bet you will score well on this part. It will surprise you like it did me. My hand was shaking during this test. Think positively tonight and up til the time you take this test. There will lots here rooting you on to victory tomorrow.

Don't click too many times or you will get a zero on that clip. That happened to me. Also, the practice videos on the CD-Rom really suck.. they are actually far easier at the test centre. So don't stress too much. Just make sure you click anytime you see a pedestrian lingering by a crosswalk or a car pulling up to the corner too fast who might pull out in front of you or anything like that and you will do fine.  :)

Thanks everyone. I did pass thank goodness!

I got 100% on the theory it was the same as the DSA Offical disk was. Down to the wording of the questions and answers. I finished it in about 10 mins as well since I have seen all the questions before.

I got 55/75 on the Hazard not bad, but I was shaking the whole time and my heart rate was high. The baby kicked me a lot as well probably not sure what was going on. At least a passed.

I would suggest to anyone in the future to just click when you see anything that could be a hazard and then click again if the hazard get worse just in case you missed it by clicking to soon!
