We're planning to go to the States (Arizona) from Manchester the middle of September (baby was born January 22nd.) I have no idea if there are better airlines than others when you've got a baby. I know essentially, all will be similar... but some may offer carrycots while others may not; I am curious what everyone's experiences have been and with whom? Or who do you recommend?

I'm going to get our tickets booked sooner than later... so they are booked and out of the way  as we still need to get his British passport and American passport dealt with and I would rather get the plane tickets out of the way and then power on with getting his passports done and ready to go.

I sat next to a family with a newborn on my last transatlantic trip on BA. The flight attendants seemed to be really attentive and provided a bassinet and several other things to the family.

If you can afford business class it's probably best.

We can't so we're going KLM (although it's actually Delta.  Not sure how that works, tbh, but my mother got the tickets).

Our 'baby' will be 17 months old, though, and he's a large boy (wearing US clothes for a 2-year-old, so he has his own seat.

Definitely can't afford business!

I've always flown United and DD was 6 months the first time she flew to California from LHR. They were very attentive and accomodating...just make sure you book the bulkhead seats as you have more room and it's plenty of room even in economy and they offer bassinetts as well.

Do any of the airlines have direct flights Manchester to Phoenix, if so that is who I would use.  Things may have calmed down by September but right now, since the underpants bomber, security at US airports is high and international passangers with connecting flights have to go through security.  Lines were reported to be 2 hours long back in January.

I know BA has direct flights to Phoenix from London Heathrow so if you would have to change planes it might be better to do it at this end.

Definately get bulkhead seats if you can.

We flew Virgin last summer from London to Boston when our DD was only 7 weeks old.  We booked her flight even before she was born.  They have a policy whereby they designate the bulkhead seats based on the age of the children, so at 7 weeks old we were pretty much guaranteed the seats. They were very helpful all the way from the booking to helping with the SkyCots on the flight.  They claim to have one flight attendant who is designated as the "family helper" but they were all helpful.

We flew BA at Christmas from London to Boston when DD was 7 months old.  We were given the bulkhead for the outbound flight, but not the inbound flight.  We tried calling to change the seats, but they said they had already been allocated to another family.  The people on the phone were not clear on the policy for allocating the seats, was it first come first serve or based on age, etc.  Everyone was very helpful at the airport and on the flight.  The check in employee explained that she was tagging our fold up stroller in case it needed to be put in the baggage hold, but that if we asked at the gate they may put it on board if there was space.  It pays to ask because the family in front of us had theirs taken away to the belly of the plane because someone at the gate (not a flight attendant) told them that was the policy.  While he was busy taking the stroller away, we nicely asked the flight attendant if there was room on board.  She took it right away.  So we had it to go through immigration at the other end.  I think it was the return journey, they actually opened the stroller up for us and it was waiting on the jetway, which is super helpful.

We are flying with BA from London to Phoenix later this month and the reason was that BA flies direct and we could use points to upgrade to business class.  Now that DD is crawling and standing up, we thought more space would be better.  But when she was little,  economy (the bulkhead seats) was more than spacious on both airlines.

First time I flew with my son it was BA and by far the best flight we ever had regarding any other airlines. I was flying on my own and flight attendants were superb help, constantly asking if I needed anything, even offering to hold the baby even though I was in a bulkhead seat as well and he was in one of their cots. Like Karen my stroller was placed on the flight as they had room and they took it off for me and unfolded it and made everything so much easier! By far best flight ever to this day and the boy is 7 yrs old now.  ;D

BA is always good, imo, but I have flown American & Delta with small kids, and they have all been fine!

I think BA is great for kids but I have done BA and Delta with babies and both are good. BA has better stuff for kids!

Thanks all - we went with BA. The lady over the phone was very friendly and we have the bulkhead seats and a cot. Marvelous! And will also be fantastic to only have a very short flight (Manchester to London) to get to our "connection"... and then can fly straight from London to Phoenix. Other airlines, you'd always have a chunk of a flight to Chicago or similar, and THEN go to Phoenix. With a baby, it's going to be great to connect within the UK.

Glad you got booked.

I wanted to add though that you can't base opinions on the airline brand but by the stewards. We have been fortunate and have flown with BA (my fave), Continental, and US Air. All of them offered great care and when I travelled to the states twice by myself with our children, we always had assistance, especially carrying my toddlers big car seat. But you never know when you might get a grumpy steward.

BA, I feel is the most expensive but they are a step above the rest so you do get what you pay for. They are one of the few that will allocate the bulkhead seats. The other airlines are a first come first serve and some will not book you into the seat in advance.

Yes, agree about stewards!

Hopefully BA is good. Being my first big traveling experience with a baby, I would like it to go as smoothly as humanly possible. It was pricey, but I'll do pricey at least for the first time with the little fella. It is in the middle of the week when it is more quiet... so hopefully the stewards will be in pleasant moods.

Man, I am SO nervous about flying again! I haven't since I moved over here... January 2007. Oooooof!

I get nervous flying too. I flew over to see my mom with my baby girl when she was 8 months old. We flew on a weekday too.

I actually chose to sit at the very back of our airplane because there were no bathrooms in the back and she didn't mind the noise.

They should give you a baby food pack once you are seated and situated so you can feed your baby when needed. I think they give you like 3 jars.

Have a great time on your trip! You guys will do great!

I'm glad we didn't go with BA.  They're striking the day we're leaving.
