Question about Provisional License
« on: March 08, 2010, 05:14:12 PM »
I am applying for a provisional license and received the form to fill everything out. The first question asks what I am applying for? Well... It says put an X in the box of all that apply.
I am unsure what to put. There is one that says "A first provisional license (with a view to passing a test) and then there is one that says "To exchange my non-UK license for a British one" but then I'd have to send in my American license and they wouldn't return it. I don't want to do that! I'm assuming I would just mark the first one "a first provisional license".

Yes, you're applying for your first provisional license, not to exchange a non-UK one for a British one.

Good luck!

However, if it is that one I mark it says I can apply online, well, I looked online and since I'm not a UK citizen I am not eligible to apply online. Do I just mark that one and mail in the form?

So, I need to send my passport and a photo, correct? I don't understand the payment part. I don't have cheques to pay... can I send a money order or pay at the post office? I don't understand that part.

I'm going to send one of my husband's cheques. I am nervous about sending my passport off. I think I will ask for recorded delivery.

You can apply for this online. I just did. You dont have to be a citizen, just a resident.

I was nervous about my passport as well, a lot of money in the visa.  Anyway, sent it recorded delivery with no problems.  It comes with with £500 insurance, which should cover the costs of replacing the passport and visa if they do go missing.

no, you cant:

Apply online for a first provisional driving licenceYou can apply for your first British provisional driving licence online if you:

are a resident of Great Britain
can meet the minimum age requirement
can meet the minimum eyesight requirement
are currently not prevented from driving for any reason
can pay £50.00 by Mastercard, Visa, Maestro, Electron, Delta or Solo debit or credit card
have a valid UK passport or another form of identity
can provide addresses of where you have lived over the last three years

It asks for the passport number for a UK passport. So u can not apply online if you are not a UK passport holder

As I said, I JUST DID THIS LESS THAN 24 HOURS AGO!!! I dont appreciate you implying that I am lying. You can apply online and then you print out a signature page and return it with your passport and passport photo. I did this last night so I am 100% sure that it can be done.

From what I can gather, you are both right.  The DVLA website quotes the criteria that Ink-Spirational listed.  However, it appears that the DVLA website application took JennM through until the end, but she still needed to post in her signature page, passport, and photo.

Please let's be nice to each other.  If you feel compelled to shout at another forum member, please take it to PM.

Thank you!  :)

I apologize.

Thank you.  Please try not to take others' comments as personally.  Like Ink-Spirational, I was not aware, either, that that was possible, so it would be good if you could give us an update on how that goes through to getting your provisional - would be good info for the forum at large, because the DVLA website gives the other impression.  Not implying that you are lying at all - far from it, just that on first glance of the criteria that DVLA lists, it appears to indicate that you could not do it.

I will update this when I get everything done. I will probably mail it the first of next week. We dont have a printer so I have to go to my future in laws to print out the signature page. Also, it doesnt say anything on that list that bans any non UKC from applying online. It just says you need a UK passport or any form of valid ID (US Passport).

Good point & more careful reading of the criteria than what I did!  :)
