Average Household income in UK

Just curious as to what the average household income is in the UK.

Looks like the Average UK Family income after Tax across all households for 2007/8, looks to be around £29000.

The latest data for the average salary income is £23500

Recently however, I've read somewhere that the average salary has now gone up to about £25000 (before tax)

With a workforce of around 27 million people,  around 8-9% (less than 4 million people)earn a salary/wage that puts them into the higher tax bracket.

I think the average is sort of pointless.  Surely the median would make more sense.

  You have a point there! I work full-time and certainly earn nowhere near that "average"!   

Good point with the footballers. I am just trying to put everything into perspective, especially with me just starting a new job.

But isn't it an average household income, not an individual average?  Between DH and myself, we actually make well over the average before tax, though individually, obviously, we are each well under it.     

Well, yeah but still having people who make tens of millions really messes up the average.

I think its worth pointing out to the OP that this can vary GREATLY depending on the area of the UK.  According to Wikipedia, the mean income in London is over £29,000 while in Wales, North East England and Northen Ireland is just over £19,000.   So do keep this in mind.   (and these are individual income stats, not household income)

Thank you. Yes, I meant household not individual so I was wondering about the post stating 23,500 to 25,000 was the average.

Think what a person makes in NYC and what a person makes in Arkansas? Think London and Northumberland. They are different worlds. Different salaries, different cost of living and different stress levels.

 I got back last night from LA and I'm glad to be back. It was noticeable all the new and expensive cars that were there  but I notice that they drove like there was no tomorrow!
Example, yesterday an SUV went off the road and through a rail and into a river. 3 dead. Sad.

Yes money pays the bills but there are other values to consider. Off my soapbox.

So the Median salary in the UK is a smidgeon above £25,000, this is individual and not quite what the OP asked in terms of household income.

Peacemaker - there are plenty and many more people who look to this and other sites when researching a potential move here and financials is one of the very biggest issues. I know you've said in your opinion costs of living and income levels etc are the same or very much the same between the UK and USA and you are entitled to your opinion of course! however much of the independant statistics and reports by all the top end reputable financial specialists show a marked and substantial difference. For the benefit of new people to this site, this topic will be visited many times and is a useful knowledge gaining resource.

Money is something we all have to have in order to live the way we want, it's a very very important factor and many a time allows or restricts many to have their other values too, not just bills!

I'm sure when and if I get there I will scream like a stuffed pig at the prices in the UK but I probably said that (col are the same) echoing what some posts have said. There maybe exception to the rules but here is one example. I go to see the cardiologist and he charges $1000 an hour. During that hour we actually get to see him about a total of 5 minutes and the rest of the time we are seen by technicians who do the cardiovascular test and blood tests.

I can't think right now of anything that is cheaper in the UK than in the US, except used BMWs (I know, close to your heart).

Oh, another one. Indian take out is cheaper in the UK

The median is an "average". So are the mode and mean.

In 2008 the mean UK income (wages earned divided by number of earners) was £26,020. The median (the amount which divides the income distribution into two equal groups, half having income above that amount, and half having income below that amount) was £20,801.

Sorry, I saw average and assumed that they meant mean, which is what average typically represents.

Either way, I still think using the median makes more sense when discussing salaries.
