Food in Checked Luggage?
« on: March 23, 2010, 05:20:34 AM »
So my mom loves to cook sweets and it so happens that my DB has a sweet tooth. My mom wants me to pack cinnamon rolls, chocolate chip cookies, rice krispy treats and brownies in my suitcase...this shouldn't be a problem, right?

TIA

I've packed all kinds of goodies- homemade and otherwise- for my boyfriend and his family.  I never had any problem.  As long as you're not bringing fresh produce, dairy or meat, you should be fine.

You will need to make sure that the items you want to bring in do not contain any prohibited foods as it could be confiscated upon entry.

I've become paranoid with food and I always declare everything now. When I went to the US last year I had two scones in my bag. The back of the customs form just asks if you have food, you can't specify what it is. So, when I went through customs the guy asked me what kind of food I had. I told him 'Two mixed berry scones'. He looked at me like I was nuts and said, 'Have a good trip.' Your baked goods should be fine, but I would definitely declare them just to be safe.

LOL. I can totally see the face.

I always have food in my bag and have never had a problem. Like the others said above, however, I never take prohibited food, like meats or dairy.

I'm glad you posted this because I was going to ask the same thing.  I'm heading back to America next week and I was going to try to bring back a few items with me that I can't find here (Velveeta Shells N Cheese, Lipton Iced Tea bags, Hidden Valley ranch dry packages, etc.).

Ha, I forgot I had taken an apple with me in the morning, and I didn't eat it - so I declared it and the customs guys just were laughing at me- "next time be sure to eat it so we don't have to destroy it. What a waste of an apple."   ;D

I ALWAYS load my suitcase up with these items....along with copious amounts of flavoured coffee....never declared anything and never have been stopped.. they do scan your bags before you get them anyways so it's not like they don't know what you are bringing back...

I don't know if I've ever told my "live snails" story.  On the way back from the UK years ago as I was checking in I saw the sign for prohibited food items (or maybe it was just prohibited agricultural items?) and one of the things on the list was live snails.  I thought, "Why would anyone want to bring live snails in their luggage?"  It turned out that the several "pretty shells" I found in Cornwall were of course live snails!  I unwittingly smuggled them into the US in my checked luggage.  I only realized they were snails a day after I got home.  I placed them around the base of my large and tall cactus, and by the next day they had climbed up the thing!

I was spot checked coming in the US once from Ireland and I was reprimanded for not declaring my candy as it was food. I have to say, I declare things going into the US, but when I come to Ireland, not so much.  :-\\\\
