Hazard Perception Test
« on: April 06, 2010, 04:06:59 PM »
I have bought a book to study for the Theory test but I havent been able to find anything for the Hazard Perception part. The DVD that the DVLA recommends gets really bad reviews on Amazon and people say that it is not worth the money. Do I even need a separate study aid? Ive been driving in the US for 13 years and it seems pretty common sense to me. My test is on May 7th so I have plenty of time to pick up a study aid if it is needed.

I would, just because, to me, it felt like the Hazard Perception test had absolutely nothing to do with real world driving and everything with just practicing the test.
I got mine from BMS, and it worked well for what I needed.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is BMS? Also to add, I cant seem to find a CDROM for Apple's only for PC's, so I guess I would be stuck with a DVD.

My bf got practice-testing software from Amazon.  I think it was this one:

He really liked it, and found it very useful in studying for the theory and hazard perception tests.  He passed on the first try, and he's told me that I will be using the same software. :)

I think she may mean BSM - its a large driving school.

Ive seen that one but it is for PC's only which seems to be pretty standard. Thanks though!

One word of caution about BSM (in my area at least) is that they often have the current student pick up the next student sometime during your lesson so you may have another student in the back seat during your lesson.   If that would bother you, you may want to ask them about this.

Oops! I totally did. Which shows how firmly I have blocked out the entire process. :) Their DVD/Cd-rom thingy was pretty good though, and I ended up taking lessons from them as well.
Oooh, that's weird about having another student in the car, it never happened to me--but I was at random times during the day. I could see how that would be weird!

Average (again in my area, only) seems to be about £25/hr.

I am so impressed that you are jumping right into lessons so soon!  Go you!

ETA: you can often get discounts if you buy a a chunk of lessons at a time and pay upfront.

BSM was 27 pounds with the discount and it just seemed high. Ill just keep looking around.

Thanks!!! Im trying to get it done before I have to start work in September. I know once I start working I wont have the time.

Who are you doing your lessons with?

I used the one recommended by the DVLA and I thought it was extremely helpful. I'd been driving in the US for 25 years, but experience won't really help you with the Hazard Perception Test. The DVD will help you figure out the tricks you'll need to pass the test ... and, believe me, it is tricky. You need to get used to when to click, how not to click too often, how not too click too late, etc. I couldn't have done it without the DVD.

I passed the first time.  :)

Thanks for the review Chary! Ill pick it up tomorrow when I am at the mall. I just wanted to hear firsthand from someone who has taken the test.

So I booked my first lesson with Red Driving School because they have a special. Its for 2 weeks from now because I want to read the Highway Code first. Will the instructor have materials to study from?
