Anyone been to Turkey? Antayla
« on: April 12, 2010, 11:48:46 AM »
We are leaving tomorrow and all booked up but a friend told us to haggle with the taxi driver?
I am nervous as we get in at 1am with 2 kids and have an hour drive.

We didnt want to do the shuttle since it will stop all along the way and that could take forever.

Any advice?

Haha... well, personally, I couldn't be bothered to haggle with anyone at 1am after a 4 hour flight and in a country I haven't been to before. But maybe on the way out you might be more comfortable with it.  :)

We went to Antalya a couple of years ago but got the shuttle bus, the journey was quite long on the bus but they did stop a couple of times for refreshment breaks.  I wouldn't think about haggling for a fare with a taxi unless I knew how much was reasonable?

It is a good idea to agree the fare before you set off.
Went to Turkey last year but we paid, via the agent, for our transfer which was as it turned out just in a taxi.
He was really good, explaining about the sights we were passing, he even stopped at a shop....we thought so he could get himself a drink, but he gave us each a bottle of water! He also stopped at a beautiful spot overlooking the sea so we could take photos.....of course after this we tipped him!
Going back though he was 1 hour late picking us up for the airport (early morning) and didn't arrive until after we'd called the local rep. However he was so apologetic, he'd obviously overslept!

I would definitely do this.  Many of the taxis in Turkey are not metered, so you have absolutely no idea if you are paying a reasonable fare or getting ripped off.  I would check with the hotel (assuming you are staying at a hotel) to find out what the average fare for that transfer is before you go.  I've been in several taxis in Turkey where the driver tried to charge me a ridiculous fare for a journey.   :o

These are excellent suggestions from my experience in Turkey. I have had similar experience to MsB.
