Enough about the football....
« on: April 20, 2010, 12:56:01 AM »
I work part-time at this one place and seriously, it seems like my entire shift day after day is spent hearing about football. I wouldn't mind if it was 80% of the time. I'm realistic. But really, these people think more about the game, their clubs, the players, than I do about sex, death, love and money combined....

lol.

Well it could be worse, your bf could be compiling lists of each world cup team and its potential players! ;)

But seriously, if it wasn't football it'd be something else. My co-workers mostly talk about clubbing and hangovers. Just as annoying a topic really.

The beauty counter girls at work are always talking about celebrity gossip, clubbing and make up (I used to bring my New Scientist magazines in to read on my breaks because their conversations were so mind-numbing :P).

About this time last year, I was trying to do some pharmacy training in the canteen and they were supposed to be doing their accounting for the week before, but instead they spent the entire hour talking about boob jobs - one of them (a 20-year-old) even said, "I'm gonna get a boob job when I'm 25, because I'm too young now, but by the time I'm 25, I don't want to be sagging." I was sitting there thinking, "Well, I'm 25 and I haven't seen any signs of sagging yet!"

Never mind, the season finishes in May. Then in June/July it'll be the World Cup and if you thought there was plenty talk now just wait untill then!
And then the new season starts in August!  ;D

DH went with me to the gynaecologist at York Hospital yesterday and while we were waiting, he picked up a celebrity gossip magazine. He had  never read one before and he was amazed by it. He said it was just  like a comic book.

My hubby talks about football nonstop also...and if it's not directly related to a specific game, it's still about the sport or some kind celebrity gossip associated with football (who such and such is married to, who has a kid with some actress, who is sleeping with someone else, etc.).  I don't know who any of these people are and could care less.  He gives me history lessons on who owned what teams, how much money they have, when was the last time they beat a certain team, etc.  I DON'T FREAKING CARE!  The bad thing is I actually enjoy sitting down and watching a football game (can't wait until US vs England World Cup!) but talking about it all day and night is starting to turn me off from the whole thing.

I can relate to a lot of this  :)

I like football -- I played it as a kid and I follow MLS here in the States, usually going to a game or two each year (WUSA too, when that was in its prime).  And it was neat at first to watch people get so riled up about a sport few follow here.  I'm just amused by it now, really -- you can go into a pub at a certain hour and all the male heads are turned towards the televisions for the entire 90 minutes.  Makes it hard to get a drink sometimes  ;)

I don't know that much but I'm more into it now, basically just through osmosis -- hearing people talk about it constantly, watching matches (not games, ha!) in the pub, having to watch Match of the Day multiple times a week with my then-boyfriend, &c.  So now I actually know who a lot of the players are, and it was fun for me to see the American player Landon Donovan on Match of the Day when he played for Everton recently.

It does amuse me to see the inattentive men and groups of cross-looking women at the pub on a match day, though.  Oh well, what can you do?  :)

Football, is this thread about football.  Lets talk about football.  LOL
It seems to happen with all sport in every country, My Brother and Father live and die by Iowa State University, seriously we have to go on suicide watch if they get beat.  My BIL will cancel Christmas is Chelsea is playing and if you value your eardrums don't call him while the match is on.
I do like watching the matches, but I just don't have time in my life memorize all the stats for every player in every situation.
Haikus are easy.
But sometimes they don't make sense.

Ha ha! DW is the one who constantly tells me who such and such is married to, whether it's an actor or whatever,

She'd only been here a few months and we were driving home and on the radio they mentioned that a football club had sacked their manager and DW said "Why? They were doing ok weren't they? They won at the weekend" - I was stunned, I didn't think she was taking any of the football in!

Sorry for the hijack, but this made me smile.  When I was a student at ISU, none of the students who weren't in sports seemed to care about it because they were so, so bad.  Even now that it's been sometime since I graduated, my parents still keep me up to date on how they are doing in sports.  End hijack.

New hijack-another ISU grad on here! And people from Iowa (I'm from Iowa City!) how exciting!

I've actually found football a great way in with relating to people both professionally and personally! I'm not a huge premiership/league fan but I LOVE the World Cup.  I love walking around during big international matches and the streets are deserted and then you'll hear random cheers (well, if England are doing well......) One condition of our trip stateside was that everyone had access to the USA coverage. Not sure who we'll be cheering for USA vs. England, as me and my son are dual citizens!

I understand the irritation.  My DH is a big fan (won't mention his team as they win most things most years and are therefore not popular with fans of other teams) as his family has followed his club for about 4 generations now - think he would have been drummed out of the family if he'd chosen another team.  I'm actually quite fond of football.  Watching it, that is.  But the endless talking ABOUT it, dissecting every strategy, blah blah blah....argh!!

This has come to perceived by the inlaws and DH as a hatred of football, rather than what it is, a hatred of the obsession.  To be fair, I'm not interested in analysis of any other pursuit I enjoy either.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Man Utd then! And the reason why they aren't popular with other fans has little to do with the fact they "win most things" as prior to 1992 that wasn't the case (they'd gone almost 25 years since winning the League)......seeing you are in Lincolnshire is actually more of the explanation why fans of other teams don't like them.....their "fans" are all over the country to the detriment of supporting their local team. Many of these "fans" never actually attend a game but criticise their local team and people who do go to those games.
Although with the advent of Sky Sports this is becoming more prevalent - I see a lot of Chelsea shirts locally as well.

Sorry, just an explanation - actually I quite like Man Utd!
