Have you been everywhere, man?!
« on: April 23, 2010, 04:19:38 PM »
Inspired by internet_addict's comment on the new 'Have you been able to see the sights?' thread in Expat Life...

What is your list?  What all have you been able to see during the time that you've been in the UK?  Including things like interesting places (cities, towns, etc) that you've been, as well as specific attractions in those places.  (If you've only driven through a town, or went to the loo there, I wouldn't include that unless it was an especially interesting loo!)

I'm off to make my list!  :D

Ok - I had to have DH help me, and there's some stuff we may have left out!  I have lived here for just over 6 years and we do a lot of country walking, so particularly in Yorkshire & the Lake District we have walked a lot of these places.  We walked from Ilkley, West Yorkshire to Bowness on Windermere, Cumbria one year (the Dales Way), and we walked from Ulverston to Carlisle (both in Cumbria - that was the Cumbria Way) another year.

Here goes, Yorkshire first...

Leeds - City centre, Royal Armouries, Art Museum, City Museum, Victoria Quarter, Kirkgate Market, Kirkstall Abbey, The Vic (old pub), Whitelocks (old pub)...among other places
York - York Minster, Clifford's Tower, The Shambles, Betty's Tea Room, internet_addict's place (great BBQs at that place!  ;))...among other places
Harrogate - town centre, The Stray (large green space/park), Betty's Tea Room...among other places
Bradford - for curry plus the National Media Museum
Whitby - Hole of Horcum (on the way to Whitby), Whitby Abbey, World Music Festival, The Magpie Cafe
Haworth - the Bronte Museum/Parsonage, Top Withens (aka Wuthering Heights)
Other Yorkshire places - Ilkley & Ilkley Moor (Baht 'at), Bolton Abbey, Grassington, Malham Cove & Gordale Scar, Reeth, Aysgarth Falls, Richmond (N Yorks - has a castle), Reeth, Masham & the Druid's Temple, Knaresborough, Fountains Abbey/Studley Royal, Hutton Le Hole, Danby Forest, Sedburgh & the Howgill Fells, North York Moors
Yorkshire Dales we have walked in - Wharfedale, Swaledale, Nidderdale, Wensleydale, Arkengarthdale, Dentdale, Airedale, Langstrothdale & Malhamdale (we only have about 9 more dales to go - but will probably capture an additional two over the May bank holiday weekends)

Lake District:  Ambleside, Bowness, Ulverston, Carlisle, Derwent Water, Borrowdale, Langdale, Coniston Water, Rydal & Dove Cottage, Lake Windermere, Alston & surrounds which included some further waterfalls

Scotland:  Edinburgh & Glasgow  :)

Northumberland & Tyneside:  Angel of the North, Alnwick & Alnwick Castle, Amble (yay Amble!  ;)), Warkworth & Warkworth Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island (Lindisfarne), Dunstanburgh Castle, Breamish Valley & the Cheviots, saw the Chillingham Wild Cattle, Hadrian's Wall at Vindolanda, Berwick Upon Tweed

Liverpool:  quick trip on a very rainy day to the Home Office (ILR), but we got to walk along the Mersey waterfront and see the Three Graces while we were there

Norfolk:  Norwich with the cathedral & castle, plus North Norfolk coast - Wells on Sea, Holt, Blakeney, Eccles on Sea, Holkham Hall & beach

London:  St Pauls, Greenwich, Camden Market, London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Natural History Museum, Hampstead Heath, Trafalgar Square, West End, Harrods, Hyde Park, Soho, St James Park, Tate Modern, The Globe (still so much to see there in London!)

Peak District:  Buxton, Bakewell, Stanage Edge, Castleton, Hathersage

Bath:  the Bath spa & baths, and all the cool Georgian architecture plus great restaurants & pubs

Wales:  Dolgellau & climbed Cadair Idris (didn't go mad there, but nearly - maybe ended up a poet instead  ;))

Cornwall:  Perranporth, St Ives (know a great little place not far from St Ives but it's a secret  ;)), Eden Project, Padstow (Rick Steins), Trebetherick, Daymer Bay & St Enodoc's church

The Cotswolds:  Painswick, Slad, and Stroud (another great place to hang out in Stroud...  ;))

Oh fun!

England:
London: Pretty much anything and everything.... been there loads
Lake District

Scotland:
Inverness and everything around it within 100 miles (up to Wick, Ullapool, down the Caringorms, out to Elgin, Isle of Skye), Edinburgh, Glasgow, Orkney Islands, Isle of Lewis

Much, much more to go....  I've got much more of Scotland to see, really trying to get out to Shetland, itching for some journeys through Northern Ireland and Wales, and have barely seen anything in England

I've seen (to visit) or been through pretty much every county in England at one time or another. I'll have to go compile a list, but to start with, I lived in Berkshire, Cumbria, Tyneside, Somerset, and Devon. Off the top of my head, I've visited London, Cornwall, Dorset, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Kent, Surrey, Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Northumberland, Durham, Yorkshire, Cheshire, B'ham, Norfolk, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Sussex, and Lancashire.

I'll come back and post some of what I saw and did in each later on.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
