« on: May 05, 2010, 11:29:47 AM »
Really missing my Quaker Oats Instant Oatmeal - Maple and Brown Sugar.

Just wondering if it is sold in the UK or am I going to have to bring some back next time?

Thanks

Quaker Oats in the UK do an 'Oatso Simple' range, which may be similar to the Instant Oatmeal in the US - I've only eaten it once before though (a free sample when it first came out a few years ago) and I've never eaten Instant Oatmeal in the US so I'm not sure how it compares. You can see the product range here: http://www.quaker.co.uk/ProductCereals.aspx. They come in a variety of flavours and each serving is in a sachet. You just boil some milk, add the sachet and then simmer for 2 mins.

There is also an instant one called Paw Ridge (get it?) with flavourings.

Although I just buy oats, add what I want to it (usually honey, cinnamon and some fruit) and do it in the microwave in about the same length of time.

I also buy the oats-so-simple and add brown sugar. So, I wouldn't bother bringing it as special cargo over. It's affordable here and usually on sale for 2-for-1. Better save the packing space for other precious edibles...

I did find Kraft macaroni and cheese (dried powder kind) at ASDA the other day...  amazing...

To me, the porridge available here is not the same as the instant oats I am used to. But saying that, I haven't tried the Oats So Simple, but the one with golden syrup might be pretty tasty. I keep thinking about giving it a go, though I'm used to adding water instead of milk. I wonder if that would make a difference? I think they are different texture-wise, as the American instant oatmeal seems chunkier whereas the porridge here seems to be more finely ground or something. Let me know what you think if you do try the Oats So Simple. I also heard that Jordan's was doing some fruit varieties of instant porridge that might be good, plus I think I saw a few at M & S once - apple and cinnamon and a few other flavours, but like I said, the texture may be different, I'm not sure.

We use Oat-So-Simple (golden syrup, and a new cinnamon flavour) and I follow the old instructions, just put the kettle on for the hot water. The kids love it. :)

So it's good with water instead of milk? I think the milk makes them too thick.. maybe that's why I didn't like the porridge here when I tried it according to the instructions on the packet.

To me it tasted the same or almost the same as the Quaker Instant Oatmeal packets in the USA, the available flavours are what's different. I haven't tried the apple-blueberry one. I just presumed they were the same and made it how I remembered with water and it was fine.

Im another that uses the Oats so simple :).. I just use milk and cook it for 2 min in the microwave.
I tend to buy the cinnamon(i also add brown sugar) , golden syrup, apple and blueberry and plain ( you can add a bit of whatever you fancy to it )..
I use milk because im not a big milk/dairy person so its one way for me to get in some dairy. Just adjust the amount of milk to how thick/thin you like :)

They sell Quaker oats instant oatmeal at my Sainbury's here in London. I don't know if they have Maple and Brown Sugar, but I know they have original, apple and blueberry, and golden syrup. I'm going to Sainburys later today, so I'll check :)

I do the oats so simple with just hot water, and I like it better than with milk.  I prefer my oatmeal/porridge almost like paste though - definitely less on the creamy side.

Anyway, I will say the instant oatmeal at home is sweeter than the golden syrup version of Oats So Simple here, and the consistency is slight different, but it does in a pinch for me, really.

I do miss Mac & Cheese, I should hit up the Asda.  I really miss more of an Amy's Selection, though.  I've scouted the various places, and while there are some Amy's things, I miss my Big Texas/All American burgers.

Instant oats...  [smiley=bleck.gif]  Too much added sugar & other added stuff.

Best oats ever:  Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Whole, Rolled Porridge Oats.

They're coarse, not finely ground.  Into the bowl, milk to cover plus a bit, 5 minutes in the microwave (with a stir in the middle) - Bob's your uncle!

My favourite variations are a really ripe banana (all mashed up) cooked right into the oats, or a little bit of that Lyle's maple-flavoured golden syrup.  Yum!  :)

How are you all doing your oats in the microwave? Every time I've tried it in the past they explode over the side of the bowl and make a huge mess (and I lose half my porridge) so I just do them on the stove. But the microwave would be quicker in the morning with half the dishes to wash...

Do you cover your bowl with cling film? Or only put a tiny bit of oats in a giant bowl or something? Are your microwaves on 50% power or do you have puny wattage (ours is a 900W behemoth)?

I'm clearly failing at the microwave porridge thing... :(
