good website for self-catering accommodation?
« on: May 11, 2010, 01:13:02 AM »
Does anyone know of a good website for booking a self-catering, cottage-y type place in England? I'm going crazy with the vast amount of information out there, and was wondering if anyone had an easy-to-navigate, must-go-to site -- to make my job a little easier!

Thanks.

I've done http://www.hoseasons.co.uk/ a few times with no complaints, though I am sure there are other perfectly decent companies that arrange cottage bookings.

Same here, we stayed in a lovely place in Scotland we found through Hoseasons and it was very inexpensive as well.

It depends on where you're going. I tend to use smaller sites, like ones designed for a particular county or region. For instance, we often stay in the Brecon Beacons and I always use Brecon Cottages.

If you want something a bit special, Forgotten Houses is really great, although it only has properties in Cornwall, Wales, Ireland and France.

If you're not wanting the Lake District, their website has sister sites for other areas of the UK

In Google, "[name of town] self catering" usually brings up some or many.  This Google search is a good way to find cottages or flats that are not aggregated with a large network, but just owned and managed by the owners who usually live nearby.

Hi Kerry- No, we haven't had our very exciting NW holiday yet - it's fast approaching, though! I'll let you know all about it when we get back (in August).

But before that, we're VERY, VERY fortunate to be able to also take a trip to England. And I'm treating my hubby to a day on a canal boat, which I know you'd appreciate!  :D

A day on a canal boat...oh that is very exciting. We just returned to France after a winter on our boat. Not the best winter to be on a boat...but I do love the pace of canal life. Do you have a trip in mind? What part of the country will you be? I would definitely recommend trying to find a traditional working boat for a day trip.

We'll be on the Oxford Canal (pick up in Lower Heyford and drop-off in Thrupp). It will be a traditional working boat, and DH is going to love it. I'm sure of it! So this will be a 'should-we-take-a-proper-canal-boat-holiday-next-time' type of day trip!

My husband says, "absolutely spot on" (he's English). We did the entire length of the Oxford Canal this winter. It was beautiful! We then went on to the non-tidal Thames, which I would highly recommend. May I ask which working boat? My husband is a bit of a "boat spotter" and probably knows the boat ;)
