Seasonal Restriction on Flying Pets from US to UK?
« on: May 12, 2010, 08:59:45 PM »
I'm sure this has been answered a million times before, but can a kind soul give a quick answer?

In planning my move to the UK, do I need to be concerned about the time of year that I will be flying my pet from the US to the UK?  From the wonderful help I've received thus far, it appears I'll be flying her out of Dulles in Washington, DC, to Heathrow in the UK via British Airways.

Bonus question  :) - On such flights, do I need to worry about my dog having to change planes?

Thanks and Cheers!

The flight should be direct, so no change of planes.

You'll need to ask BA specifically if they have limits on when your dog can fly. Most airlines refuse to take animals if the temperature is above (or below) a certain temperature, which may rule out flying in certain months from DC.

I'm moving to Canada in July and my cat and dog will not be allowed to travel from the 20th of June to 10 September because of embargoes due to heat (Air Canada).    They'll go ahead and stay with family for the two weeks.

You'll have to check each airline specifically, but for instance - I live in Florida and I know that there is an embargo on flying pets out between June and September (I checked Atlanta too, and they don't fly between May15th and September!!). Since I can't leave May 31st (was going to - but since it's memorial day they won't do it, I was going to try to leave earlier but I graduate on the 29th so...) we are instead going to drive our cats up to Washington DC to leave out of Dulles.

I think you should be fine to leave out of Dulles - although they didn't mention if there was a specific temperature that would make them unable to fly. I probably should have asked that! Hopefully we won't encounter that...

I would definitely recommend that you call the airline company well in advance of choosing your date to fly as there are apparently "blackout" dates that they either won't fly pets or the UK won't receive pets...and of course, on Holidays they don't fly pets (internationally, I dunno about domestically).

Thanks so much for all the kind, helpful replies to my query!  And good luck to you, Reinadeluz, on getting your cats to Dulles.  Weather is fickle, but thus far the DC area has had a mostly cool spring, so temps at the end of May will remain mild with luck!

Cheers!

Update:  For Air Canada, there was an embargo on animals flying as baggage but not cargo.  I sent both my guys cargo on the same flight as us on July 2nd.  I've shipped my cat several times, always cargo and I would never do it any other way.
