Preparing for a quiz off
« on: May 13, 2010, 10:38:31 AM »
I was trying to find the pub quiz thread where we discussed this, I think?, but I have a bit of an exciting opportunity, if I can actually make it happen!

My company was approached by Eggheads to put together a team to compete on the show.  So, we're having a quiz off to get the best and the brightest for the 6 we need for the team.

I doubt I'll make the final team from the 20 of us who put ourselves forward to compete in the quiz off, however, I don't want to look a complete idiot.  So how and where to begin? I think I have a month or so to prepare...

WOW! I'm soooo freaking jealous. I'm a serious Eggheads junkie... I watch it every day!
I'd suggest catching up on current events for sure. Making sure you are pretty familiar with the old English tv shows and actors on them and shows like Corrie, Emmerdale and Eastenders. You probably have the science category covered considering your job and the music covered considering your hobbies. Might be worth reviewing Olympic stuff - like rules for the different categories and previous winners, just for a rough idea about it. Seems like they ask a lot of questions about the Olympic games, old English tv shows and actors, and some current or fairly recent events. I'm sure that should do it. I mean, you never know what they would ask, so I think studying in advance might be slightly pointless, but if I were going to prepare for going on the show, those are the things I would familiarise myself with because they are probably the categories that I know the least about.
Good luck! That would be so exciting to see you on there! Eeeee!  ;D

No idea, general knowledge books maybe?

Good luck though.  Let us know if you are on.  I do like to watch eggheads occasionally.  :)

Cool, thanks!

I'm going to give it my best shot here. We have lots of smart folks at this company, so I'm sure they'll pick 6 people much brighter than me.

I definitely struggle with the old British television shows and British history related things.  However, when they have an odd American related question, I'm ok  :P

Oh if in the odd circumstance where our company team makes it onto the show (you have to audition to get on in the first place), and then the even rarer occasion where we beat the eggheads, we'll donate any monies to charity.

ah Phatbeetle that's awesome! There must be something in the air - I just got a call this morning from a Beeb researcher that Nigel Slater's Simple Suppers wants to film my little floating garden!

I'm rubbish at quizzes, though, so I'll leave the others to give you much better advice. ;)

That's amazing!

You too PB, I'm such a quiz junkie, I was going to be on the team for Uni challenge but chickened out at the last minute as I didn't want to look like an idiot and the end set of  questions were ALL physics related, they named the number and you had to name the unit. I would have rocked it! (They did still go through, but lost in the next round, in both episodes the guy who replaced me didn't answer a single questions, I'm such a fool!)

That's AWESOME!!

PB for British History, try British History for dummies.  It gives a decent overview of British History, but doesn't go too much into the details.  I was all ready to mock it as a book, but I've found it's not too bad.   :)

Dummies books are fantastic for a basic overview of something.  Phatbeetle, good luck!  I hope you make it on the team.  Let us know how it all goes!

I have no advice, but wow that's great PB!  :) I love watching those shows and doing pub quizzes with my friends here, but I'm basically rubbish and I'm WAY too big a chicken to ever do Eggheads.  Good luck!  I really hope you get your chance!
