Lake District Suggestions
« on: May 25, 2010, 09:55:52 AM »
Mr K and I are taking a mini-break to the Lake District.  (We wanted to go someplace and didn't want to be affected by ash clouds or air strikes!)  We are going the end of June and will be staying in Windermere.

I know we will want to do the boat tour on the lake.  But after that we are pretty open.  We belong to the National Trust, so I am going to look and see what interesting places we can visit.  Any other suggestions?

Well, if you are like me, you might like to visit Keswick and the pencil museum. I am famous for loving bizarre museums and etc, though.  It's a cute little town, though, and there's also a graphite mine to investigate (DH is involved in graphene based physics...so we look at graphite mines!). They also have a James Bond museum--(I really do have a tendency to seek out the wacky when I visit a new place).
Other than that, the Wordsworth House etc is nice if you haven't seen it yet (and care about Wordsworth...), and I would definitely suggest finding a few hikes you are interested in.

Apparently according to my Lake District boy Ulverston is "is quite nice" and they have a market on Thursday and Saturdays.  Also, he says there is a nice cinema/restaurant/bar called Zeffirelli's in Ambleside.  And he says to not rent a rowboat but pay ten quid extra and get a motorboat in Windermere, something to do with leaks and taking on water in the rowboats and it being a scary, deep lake.

I loved Windemere so much to walk around and see including Beatrice Potter stuff which was neat.  Yes I loved Keswick as well for the boat ride and the center square.  There was an incrediable cheese shop in Keswick.  Just go and play it by ear but to sit on the dock and have lunch and watch the boats.  We took to the boat to ambleside <? i think that is the name> and hung out over there for a pint and walking around.

Ohh Enjoy!

Second the pencil museum. Seriously, its quite interesting.   :)
Beatrix Potter stuff.
The classic car museum
Some stone circles are worth seeing (can't remember their names)
Lots of great walking to do as well.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

You're stuck with me!

Wow!  I knew this would be the right place for suggestions. Thank you all!

Can't wait to get up there.

I was just up in Keswick last month, and I can definitely recommend the Pencil Museum - more interesting than you'd expect and you can take your photo next to a giant pencil - what's not to love?  :)

Also in the Keswick area, I'd recommend walking/cycling/driving to Castlerigg Stone Circle - absolutely stunning! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlerigg_stone_circle
