Weekend in London!
« on: May 25, 2010, 04:47:09 PM »
I am heading down with a friend June 25th..Staying near Russell Square woohoo

NOW I want to do the london eye and I hear there are discounts if you buy online but my search is like a million - does anyone have experience with a specific vendor?

We are going to wonder and be tourists for sure even with JennM ;-)

anything else you can think of? We will get there around 1pm on Fri and I plan on hitting Chipotle  8)

I'm pretty sure Russell Square is really close to the British Museum--that's something I wouldn't miss!

This is a nice gastro pub near there:

Bloomsbury is noted for ties to very famous writers and you could do this walk for free:

The Tate Modern, the Victoria and Albert Museum, walk along the South Bank. The Globe Theatre.

If you're doing The London Eye, I recommend looking at when sunset is going to occur and plan your ticket so that you are going up in the light, but coming down at sunset. Gloriously two views of London.

Also, if you're veggie, Mildred's is great:

Have fun!

Thanks guys!

Yes we plan on doing the eye - MLG great suggestions sunset! CB thanks so much for the link ;-)

Us two are coming down by train Friday as we got a package for hotel and train so that is done.

I know we will never fit it all in but that gives me a reason to come back haha

My only real goals are:
1. Harrods
2. London Eye
3. Big Ben
4. JennM and few others that live in london *thinking Saturday night drinks at a pub

The rest is gravy and can do again since once I go once I will be good with going again maybe grabbing Jewelz!

I have found really cheap London Eye deals on lastminute.com. They will probably have some other London bank holiday deals as well.

Yeah! I would love to go with you sometime! Maybe we can find some cheap deals when they run another special on the train journeys. My favourite thing I saw in London, not that I saw everything there was to see, of course, but I did do quite a few touristy things, was Westminster Abbey. It truly is incredible. And its just across the road from Big Ben, so you could see both.  :)

If you're going to do a museum, I'd recommend the V&A over the British Museum, especially since it's just a short walk from Harrods. While the British Museum has some amazing artifacts (Rosetta Stone, bits of the Parthenon, etc), the V&A is a much prettier museum to simply wonder. It's free and has select galleries open until 10pm every Friday evening.

If you're going to the Southbank area (Globe, Tate Modern), definitely have a walk through London Bridge to see Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market (open Thursday, Friday, Saturday). If you time it right with the market, you can get lots of free samples for cheese and sweets. :D
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' Kurt Vonnegut

If you pre-book your eye 'flight' I definitely recommend getting a slot near dusk. It is absolutely gorgeous!

I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

Can I suggest a Day for you? It's very touristy, but fun , it's a walk with lots of stops :)

Take Tube to Tower Hill. Walk out  - directly in front of you is the Tower of London.
Stop at the Tower, or don't, it's still a cool thing to see :)
Walk to the Left of the Tower of London and walk across Tower Bridge
Get to the other side and turn right, walk past City Hall  and past the London Dungeons and past London Bridge Station.
Go down under the bridge and grab a bite to eat for breakfast and a Monmouth Coffee at Borough Market (be sure to go early before the crowds go crazy).

Walk along the riverside past Southwalk Cathedral and along Clink Street, you'll go past the Golden Hinde and Clink Prision Museum.
Walk parallel to the Thames and walk past Shakespeare's Globe  and the Tate Modern. Keep following the Thames Path and go around the bend in the river, walk past the National Theatre, Royal Festival Hall and Jubilee Gardens.  You'l; also go past Gabriel's wharf which has some little shops and stalls and the OXO tower.

You'll now be able to see The Eye. Go on the Eye :) The Aquarium and the Saatichi Gallery are also here.
Cross Westminster Bridge  (or before you go you can visit the Florence Nightingale museum and go see Big Ben (P.S if you're a resident of the UK you can send a letter to your MP and go up and see Big Ben for free!) and Churchill Cabinet war Rooms if you're so inclined.
You Can then keep going and do Westminster Abbey and Walk up St. James Park towards Buckingham Palace.

As you're sticking close to the river you'll get great views of St Pauls, Palace Westminster etc

We did a very similar walk to the one you suggest, cheesebiscuit! As far as The Clink, anyway, and then we headed over into The City to look for Roman ruins. There are some very cool hidden bits and pieces that a lot of people don't know about!
