N. Carolinian who done come to Norfolk...
« on: May 28, 2010, 01:39:15 PM »
... since January 18th, and loving it.

OK, I've lived in North Carolina (Raleigh/Research Triangle area) for 41 years, but to set the record straight, I'm Richmond, Virginian by birth. (That's important, somehow).

Married to my English sweetie for four point something-or-other years. She was working in the US when we met over six years ago. Late last year, she discovered an opportunity for a job in Norfolk, very close to her parents and also to her son, who lives near Norwich. So, she applied for -- and got! -- the job, and came over last December. I did the spouse visa application thing and got my clearance in mid-January. OK, so that wasn't the greatest time to arrive, but I did it and actually survived the winter. Just trying to figure out if it's actually over yet!

I'm grateful to find this forum, and look forward to meeting folks here who're sharing the ins and outs, ups and downs of life in the UK. For my part, I'm taking to it rather readily, and feel pretty acclimatized... not really experiencing much in the way of culture shock. Feeling very fortunate to live in a totally awesome village north of Swaffham. I think Norwich is close to being the ideal city, and I enjoy visiting every couple of weeks or so, but I'm REALLY enjoying the rural lifestyle out here in the middle of Norfolk. Even got my first vegetable garden growing since, sheesh, the late '80's!

OK, enough me stuff. I'm off to explore what happening here on the forum. Peace!
CAMILLA: You sir, should unmask.

STRANGER: Indeed?

CASSILDA: Indeed it's time. We all have laid aside disguise but you.

STRANGER: I wear no mask.

CAMILLA: (Terrified, aside to Cassilda.) No mask? No mask!

Welcome to the forum, and to the UK!  My husband is from Norwich originally & I'm from Kansas.  But he left Norfolk for new pastures 'oop north' about 15 years ago (to Middlesbrough, then Leeds, where we are now) & I moved over (after a few years in Tampa Bay, FL) in 2004 - when we got married (met online).  Hubby's parents still live in Ringland though, so we're down there about a couple times a year or so, visiting them.

Feeling very fortunate to live in a totally awesome village north of Swaffham.

Hee hee Swaffham!  One of the first 'Norfolk sayings' I learnt was... 'e come from Swaffham, where they don't know nuffin', but just keep on troshin'

So everytime we drive down, we ring the in-laws once we get to around Swaffham along the A47, and they expect me to say that (very badly) in a Norfolk dialect...  ;) :P

Also:  He yer fa got a dickey, bor?  ;D  ((Has your father got a donkey, boy?)

I've lived in NC for 10 years now and soon I'll be in Cambridgeshire for a couple years at the minimum, but I'll always definitely still call myself a Kentuckian. My husband's gran has lived in Scotland for 60 years and still identifies herself as a Manc. I think it's normal to identify yourself by your geographical past.
Arrived 12 Oct 2010/Spousal Visa
Whole new world for a Southern gardener, but I'm very happy.

Welcome Rick_K!

What a beautiful place to live.. that is a very nice village, excellent ruins, lovely churches nearby.  Great cycling country (especially as you getter older and cannot climb the steep hills!!)  Also, for walking, the Peddars Way.  One day I'd like to walk from Castle Acre to the sea.

Good luck with new adventures!
