DVD players that can play region 1 and 2
« on: June 08, 2010, 08:45:19 AM »
My DH and I have a dvd player that we have tried the online code to make it be able to play dvds from region 1 and it doesn't work maybe it is because it is a really cheap one or that it is old. Anyways can anyone recommend a dvd player that is able to still buy that isn't expensive and that you can play region 1 and 2 wether it automatically does it or there is a code to use. Thanks for the advice! ;D

Multi-region DVD players are pretty cheap (and they play the DVDs automatically... no codes)... we bought one for my grandmother a couple of years ago for about £40 or so :).

I have a multi-regional DVD/VCR player in my room which automatically plays DVDs from any region and also has NTSC playback so I can watch US VHS tapes too. It's about 6 years old now though, so I'll need to invest in a new one soon.

We bought this one...

The price seems to have gone up since we bought it, as I don't remember paying that much. It works brilliantly though! The very first review tells you how to punch in the code to make it multi-region, which worked straight away.

If you handy and semi geeky/tech like me you can forget a DVD player and use your computer.  We have a HDMI cable from tower to TV and just switch the "source".  I watch everything online but use the big tv as second monitor to move over the movies and TV shows.

Just a thought

One trick is that most DVD players in the UK are actually multi-region.  You don't have to pay extra, but you will have to search a bit for the online forums that give you the right codes.  I wonder if you can't find another code in another site that will make the one you have work.  I bought a multi-region one here and still ended up needing to search for instructions and the code online as it didn't work until I did the work myself (none of which was in the owners manual).  I was annoyed when I realized the first one I had given away was probably fine and I didn't need to buy another.

I got one at curry's for about £30.  I walked in and asked for a multi-region.  They gave me one and then handed me a print out of the code to change the region.

I went to Currys awhile ago and they said that they couldn't help that I would have to go somewhere else. Something about against their policy...

My husband says there a lots of forums on the internet to tell you how to "hack" each brand of DVD player. The one we have at home has been "hacked" so we can play my region 1 DVDs as well. So google 'hacking dvd' and you should come up with something. As for having help at Curry's.. you just have to get a sympathetic salesperson.

The trick now, is about Blu-ray... not hackable, because the region code is actually on the disk itself, not the player. Each movie studio makes it's own decision on whether to put the region code on it (Universal is one that NEVER puts a code on so can be played on any Blu-ray machine.)

I bought a really cheap one made by a brand called Micro. I only needed it for the kids to watch their DVD's my mom sends them. I did a search online and found out about this one and how cheap it was and went for it. It has been brilliant and we have had it for about 4 years and no issues.
