FBAR question - when to file?
« on: June 12, 2010, 12:19:57 PM »
Hi,

My wife - US citizen, in the UK since Feb 2009 - has some FBAR questions...any help would be much appreciated.

When does she need to file the FBAR form, given that her UK bank account was opened in August 2009?

Where can we find the official exchange rate for use with this process?

...so...does she need to file before end of June 2010, or should she wait until the next calendar year?  We're a bit confused by some of the wording, and it's our first time getting all of this UK/US tax stuff done.

Thanks very much,
Adam + Trent

...think we've figured this out...as far as I can tell, she needs to file the FBAR now, given that the account was opened in 2009.

Hopefully nothing can go wrong with that...

Tax return is a whole different matter though, but I'll post a new question on that subject...
Cheers
Adam

The deadline for the 2009 tax return is this tuesday (15 June) unless you file a form asking for a further extension.

oanda.com has exchange rates, I think you need the dec 31 rate for the fbar.

Agree with this. And the deadline for the FBAR is June 30th.

While oanda might do - I have heard Treasury people say they want you to use the official US Treasury 12/31 rate for the FBAR.  This is not available online so you have to call or email them for this.

Less pedantically, do remember that the FBAR is a received by Treasury deadline of June 30th - not a mailed by date.

Thanks Guya--do you happen to have this rate? Or has anyone else who has called or emailed wish to share it?

Good to know about the FBAR. I had forgotten that. I assume this means it needs to be in Michigan by the 30th, and that dropping it off at the Embassy by the 30th won't do?

The Embassy said last year they would take the form up to the 30th...
