White vinegar for cleaning?
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:59:39 AM »
This isn't quite food related, but yet it is ;)

I'm having trouble finding basic white vinegar for cleaning in the grocery stores. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place, but even a quick search on mysupermarket.com comes up with all kinds of fancy vinegars - not the basic white vinegar for cleaning.

My bathtub drain needs a small cleansing and because my cat comes in and licks at the drain, I don't want to use anything that will harm him. I'd planned to make a simple vinegar and baking powder with boiling water mix, but I'm not able to find basic vinegar! Am I blind?

Thanks for any advice :)

Not in the stores or online shops that I looked at. All kinds of other types, white wine, balsamic, malted, you name it, but not cheap white vinegar!

I have white vinegar that is sold as a cleaning product - with a spray pump.

White vinegar is also known as spirit vinegar or distilled vinegar.  I use distilled vinegar from Tesco:

I've seen white vinegar in medium to large grocery stores here, it's usually right by the malt vinegar but it usually tends to be placed on the bottom shelves.

That's exactly what I need, I think my search fu has truly failed me today. Thank you!

Our local Tesco has vinegars in two different spots: some are near the spices and oils, and some are in the condiment aisle (lol I initially typed that as 'condiment isle'- interesting holiday spot!)  The balsamics/ red wines/ etc are in the first group, and the malt/ distilled are in the second.

I found it to be a very confusing way of displaying them, to be honest.  I was in the same situation, looking for white vinegar, and trying to convey to the Tesco information desk lady that I just needed a plain vinegar to use for cleaning was a painful experience.  Thankfully, I found it on my own, by accident, a few weeks later.  (same thing happened when I asked where the rice cakes were at another Tesco.  The lady took me to the bakery section... when I did finally find them, on another visit, I did double-check to see that they're called rice cakes here.  Indeed, the Tesco brand is called Tesco Rice Cakes.  sigh)

ASDA sells it as distilled vinegar.  Not really sure where it is located in the store as I had it delivered (part of the reason I love online shopping...don't have to try to find the products!).

I saw recently that you can add salt to the vinegar/baking soda brew to clear drains. It might have been Kim on "How clean is your house?" actually.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person who is bewildered by the way things are arranged in supermarkets.

I'm fine if I'm looking for something like bread or meat, where there is a big sign that says BREAD or MEAT, but if I need to find apple sauce or vegetable oil or eggs, then I am stumped.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the way things are placed.

And I don't shop at Tesco, so this happens in other supermarkets as well.

I have never yet seen a supermarket that stocks things in places I consider logical.  What goes through people's heads when they arrange them is one of life's great mysteries.

I never understood why tinned fruit is with breakfast food  ??? I don't know many Brits who put tinned pears on their corn flakes but maybe that's just the crowd I travel in?
