Duty/Customs bringing personal items (??)
« on: June 17, 2010, 12:09:17 AM »
This may be one silly question, but I would rather get some input!

My husband and I had to jet back to the states because my mother was hospitalized. When we return, we'd like to bring my computer with us.  Do I have to declare this coming through??  I was looking over the HMRC.gov site and am thinking I don't but would also like to be sure!

Feel free to make fun of me for asking but I'd like some input  [smiley=dizzy2.gif];)

Bring it with you as in as a carry-on? If it makes you feel better, I didn't declare my computer...

I didn't declare mine either.  It came over as a carry-on and I never even thought about needing to declare it.

I am afraid that evading tax or customs duty is not sensible as this is a criminal act.

I would ask HMRC first if you are unclear.

You would have to pay import duty and/or VAT on a brand new unused PC I believe, but I think that a used item is free of import duty.
