Soccer is a leftwing conspiracy
« on: June 18, 2010, 06:26:22 PM »
It seems that US conservative media figures are attacking the World Cup and the sport of proper football ("soccer"). On Glenn Beck's June 11 program, he said that soccer was being pushed as part of a leftist agenda.

Quote
"...it doesn't matter how many beer commercials they run, we don't want the World Cup, we don't like the World Cup, we don't like soccer, we want nothing to do with it."

He later said of soccer,

Quote
"I hate it so much, probably because the rest of the world likes it so much, and they riot over it, and they continually try to jam it down our throat."

... so if the "rest of the world" likes something, it must, by definition, be a bad thing? (And all of America shares one throat?)

On the June 10 G.Gordon Liddy show, Dan Gainor said that the sport of soccer "is being sold" as necessary due to the "browning of America."

Are these people for real? What is the browning of America?

There are idiots in every country.  From the ones that have spouted that crap to the ones that actually do cause problems at matches.  Idiocy transcends all borders.

I think he's talking about all of the immigrant people that have brown skin(take your pick-Latinos/Hispanics, Indians, Middle Easterns) that are going into the States, and bringing soccer with them. Which, really, is stupid, because football is popular with people all over the world, not just those groups of people. Racism doesn't stop, it just gets easier with being "politically correct" and using different words. It's one of the things that I don't  miss about the States.

Don't they realize how stupid they sound? (Obviously not!) Stupid and just plain evil.

It's Glenn Beck. He is shrill and racist. I disregard any "news" or sound bites that are attributed to him.

He probably doesn't like football because USA is not the best. Why waste effort and TV space on a game that undermines the US hegemony. And yet, millions of American children play soccer at all ages. Because nobody likes it? Obviously a vast conspiracy having nothing to do with fun.

Glenn Beck is a clown.  Disparaging soccer is just another way to attack people from other countries.

He probably doesn't like football because USA is not the best.

This.

Actually, all organised sport makes me think of what Noam Chomsky says in Manufacturing Consent about it being a tool to control and dull the masses, or something to that effect.

I always have to laugh and then cringe at the absurdity of Glenn Beck... and then worry since there are far too many people who actually take him seriously. (One person being too many!)

He's an idiot. Full stop. Sadly, other idiots listen to him.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I once read an article (during the 94 World Cup in fact) written by a Cincinnati sports journalist talking about football in America. He said that there was nothing wrong with kids playing soccer and it was great exercise, but unlike in other countries, 'thankfully Americans grow out of it.' I'm sure Glenn Beck would agree with that a**ehole.

Glenn Beck is a lunatic.  Imagine an American version of the Daily Mail, then make it into a TV show, and that's Glenn Beck.

I don't know who the other clown is, but if he was on Gordon Liddy's show, he's probably a lunatic, too.

I have been to numerous NFL games where there has been fighting and injuries among the fans...well, ok, so they were all Raiders games.   ;D

But still proof that idiocy is border-free.

I have been thinking about this. The parallel I see is with Der Stürmer and Julius Streicher. (The propaganda medium and figurehead that I personally am reminded of. There are others that you can think of.) They are not called "shock jocks" for nothing. Outrageous ideas get repeated even by people who don't agree with them. When people listen to these shows, they are not hearing a bunch of "stupid" guys shooting the breeze and saying the first things that come into their heads. That would be a dangerous assumption. What is happening is carefully thought out and done according to a plan, by methods that are pretty well known and documented. Consider what Hermann Goering said about motivating the average guy to support a war...

"...of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on
a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of
it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people
don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in
Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the
country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to
drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist
dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no
voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders.
That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked,
and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the
country to danger. It works the same in any country."

What about the guy who was quoted as saying that soccer originated from South American indians kicking around the head of one of their enemies! So apart from being racist he also knows nothing of the history of the sport as originating in England.

I also like how BEck claims that soccer is socialist, maybe he ought to compare how soccer teams sell players for vast sums of money with the US draft system allowing the bottom team first pick of players, and then say which is most socialist!
