Google Voice Help
« on: July 19, 2010, 07:30:06 PM »
I've gotten a US number assigned to me with Google Voice.  I can log on the laptop and send text to my sister back in the US. And it shows up from that Google Voice number.  She can text me back and I see it online.

Question is - can I receive text from my sister to my UK IPhone that are forwarded from my Google Voice number?

Thanks any help or advice is appreciated :)

lizzy,

I wish but the answer is no...they don't support international texting yet.

I have it forward to my email and I can reply straight from my email like a text.  My cell here is a iphone so it makes it quite easy.

side note: sign up for a UK skype to go number and you can call that and have people on speed dial and it is uber cheap to call the US from anywhere on your cell.

If I can help let me know - I am HUGE google voice fan

1. log into google voice
2. click (voice) settings
3. click on voicemaail/text tab
4. text/email forwarding - fill this out
5. save and exit

Did y'all sign up before leaving the US?  I just tried to sign up from within the UK but got a "we're not available in your country" message.

I used a VPN to sign up, so that my IP was US-based.

Thanks for the idea!  I figured that's what it'd come to.  Now I'll have to talk my mom through it, which should be an adventure.  :)

I can help you if you need too...I VPN into the states for work and can do it there if you think mom will have problems ;-)

Got mine all sorted to send the text as an email to my account.

I use a program called Hotspot or Hotshield blocker to change my IP to US.  You could try that to set up your Google Voice.  I use it to catch up with my US TV Programs online.

Thanks y'all!  If mom & I can't get it sorted out I'll probably look into Hotspot or may take up Jenn's generous offer, but hopefully we'll be able to muddle our way through it.  :)
