Lollipop Man for Grownups
« on: July 21, 2010, 09:19:49 AM »
The building that I work in is next door to a school.

To get to work, I have to cross a zebra crossing just outside the building.

There is a lollipop man who works at the crossing, helping the schoolchildren get across the road.

The weird thing is, when I am crossing the street, or when another adult is crossing the street, he will walk into the road and hold up his "lollipop" to stop traffic, just as if he were helping children cross.

I have lived near an intersection near a school in the US where there was a crossing guard, and the crossing guard only told children when to cross the street.  They ignored adults.

It feels very strange, as an adult, having someone help me to cross the street.  I say "good morning" to the lollipop man, because I figure it would be rude not to say anything, but I feel awkward.

I wouldn't stress about it.  I've noticed they do the same thing out here.

Why would anyone stress about it?!  He sounds super sweet and gentlemanly.  I'd say thank you and smile.

I'm not stressed. I just find it unusual.

I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced that and thought it was strange.

I wish I had a lollipop man (in fact I wish I had one following me wherever I went).  I hate /have a bit of a phobia of crossing streets crossing streets!!! (Yay for getting myself hit by a car when I was 10!) Any street, no matter the traffic. So I'd probably go out of my way to cross the street with the nice lollipop man.   :-[

I used to live next door to a primary school and the lollipop lady always helped me cross.

The lollipop lady at DDs school always stops traffic for all the adults to pass as we are coming/going.  Granted, she stands directly infront of the school gate opening so the only people who would (in theory) be crossing at that exact spot are people going to/from the school...don't know if she'd help some random non-school person across...but she probably would because she a super duper sweet lady.  I think it's really nice because it's the major road in/out of village and it's busy that time of morning...so it's nice to not have to wait 10 minutes for a clearing to be able to cross!

I love lollipop people!

Wish I had one where I live now, the road is a NIGHTMARE. The amount of times I've missed a bus as I can't get across...and there isn't a crossing for miles :(

Not sure if he's still there now, but we've had the same lollipop man round the corner from us for about 20 years - he's lovely :). He stops the traffic for anyone who wishes to cross the road, not just kids and he waves at everyone who drives past. I've just seen it as him going above and beyond his job duty and being kind to everyone :).

There's one on my way to my in-laws with Jean in the morning who's lovely.  She's very friendly and smiles and says hello etc. as we cross.

Our neighbour is a substitute lollipop man all over the city and we both laughed with surprise to see him covering her spot one morning  ;D

I live across the road from the bus stop and there's a lollipop man there and on multiple occasions (when it's rainy in particular) he's seen me come flying out the door and then stopped the traffic so that the bus would be held up and I could get over the road to catch it. LOL

Living in Alameda (where the nuclear wessels are) the crossing guards always stopped traffic for me and I was never out walking with kids. I was always a bit embarrassed by it 'cause I felt like they stopped more cars then was necessary for longer than was needed and I didn't like being that much of an inconvenience for the drivers :o/

Yes, the lollipop men and ladies are for helping children and adults cross the road. The fella is doing his job properly. :)

Considering how much traffic is around here during term time, our lollipop peeps are really a blessing to have.

Now I'm picturing a yellow marshmallow chick with a sign stopping traffic, LOL
