Hello! Just cracking the door on a new adventure.
« on: July 23, 2010, 03:05:28 AM »
Hello All! This is my first post here. My husband and I have decided that it may be better to raise our son, who is 2 years old,  in England rather than on Long Island.

My husband was raised in California but he has British citizenship. I was born and raised in Southern California. It has always been my dream to live in England.  We have started the long and complicated process of relocation.  Since we are doing this on our own we don't have a definite timeline but I would like to have our house ready to go on the market in about six months. Of course, I am getting more and more nervous about changes coming to the immigration policy but there isn't much we can do. We just have to get things organized and done as quickly as possible.

I will do my best not to annoy everyone with my multitude of questions and I'll try to put my posts in the correct areas. I am looking forward to this new chapter in our lives and to making some new friends here on the board and abroad as well. I am open to questions, suggestions and advice any time!

Welcome to UKY! Most everyone is sleeping now cos they're in the UK already, but I'm sure they'll be along soon, too. ;)

Good luck with your move! It sounds exciting! BTW- I was just in Long Island a couple of weeks ago. Sadly my car got broken into and some stuff was stolen (so that's my memory of there!) Otherwise, NYC was lovely.

Welcome!

I lived on Long Island from 2004 until my move to the UK in 2009 and now in Philly until my move back to the UK in October.

I was on Eastern LI and to be honest did not like it at all.  Beaches are lovely but other than that, it was never a good fit.

I am happy you found this forum as everyone is very kind, knowledgable and supportive.

Good luck with your plans!   :)

Sorry to hear about your car. I hope that it wasn't anything precious that was taken.  Whenever we go into the city I am constantly worried about the car being either stolen or broken into. I love to visit NYC but I don't think I could live there! :)

We have been living here since 2001 and we still don't really feel like we fit in. We live near Lake Ronkonkoma. I love Fall here (plus my birthday is in October which makes it extra special) and I like Winter when I don't have to drive around in snow.  When I am in California I miss Long Island but when I'm in England I dread having to come back.

My SIL lives in North London and the rest of the family live in either East London or Essex. I would like to live maybe just outside London so that we can be close to my SIL. We would love to live in London but we need more space than we can afford as we have two German Shepherds. Of course, it all depends on where my husband finds work. He is not keen on having a long commute.  His favorite thing to remind me of, though, is that anywhere will be better than where we are now.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. I am on a couple of Yahoo groups and so far I like this forum much more.

Lake Ronkonkoma!  I lived near there in Smithtown.  lol

I love Little Vincents pizza.  Have a slice or 2 for me.  That I miss!

And, yes, autumn is nice in LI.  Just not the traffic especially on 347 or the LIE.  THAT I do not miss.  But, I do miss the pizza and Campus Heros on 25 in Selden ... never stopped calling them hoagies though.  I never fit in there either.

Good luck!

Welcome! I am a Long Island girl myself, I hated it growing up, but do enjoy visiting! To be honest, I enjoy it while I am there but am always glad to come home to Manchester! I am a South Shore girl, from Merrick! Heading over in two weeks...and can't wait to hit Target, the Source and all the other shops with my two little kids!! Good luck with the move!
