Squash

Has anyone ever found yellow summer squash, acorn squash, or spaghetti squash here? I seem to only ever see butternut squash at the shops. I miss yellow summer squash so much, it was always my favourite vegetable as a kid.

As a matter of fact my greengrocer had yellow summer squash today! I didn't buy any, but my little boy was fascinated by it. I also live near a Vegan Co-operative supermarket and they have all kinds of unusual squashes, its a happy day in my world when they have Patty Pan Squash in stock!!! Look around at some off the beaten path places!

We've had an orange acrorn squash in our Abel & Cole box the last two weeks out of three.

Plus I've got a patty pan marrow and two spaghetti squashes slowly growing up in my container garden. :) I really like squash!

I dunno that's just what they called it! It's from this seed collection, which is also the place I got my spaghetti squash and tomatillo seeds from, too. All producing rather happily in my ignorant care!

What about more "ethnic" markets? Last summer, I noticed there were all kinds of veggies I didn't see at Sainsbury's when we were in the area where they had regular food markets. (BF lives in an area with a heavy Asian, Middle Eastern and even some African population.)

Would it be mean of me to mention the squash/zucchini casserole I had tonight for dinner? Pre-steam both, along with some chopped onion. Mix in casserole dish with marinara sauce and fresh parsley. Then, top with fresh bread crumb/parmesan/parsley topping (I used a food processor to grind it all together). Cover and cook on well, 400F for about 30 mins. then uncover the last 5 minutes to brown the topping! :D I was just telling BF that I would miss yellow squash if I couldn't find it over there!!

I don't know how much luck you'll have finding it up there Jewlz, but for next year you can try to grow it. Like zucchini, it grows so easily. The lady who runs my boys' preschool has it growing out of pots and straight up a pole she trains it to. Takes up very little space that way.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I thought this thread was going to be about orange or lemon squash (the drinking kind)!  :P

Me too.

Marrows are like giant courgettes.  I had my first one a few days ago.  I cut it lengthwise, scooped out the seeds, oiled it, baked it until browned, stuffed it with red sauce and chopped up cooked sausages, and topped it with cheese.  Not bad at all.

I've not seen spaghetti squashes here, and I've really been looking.

HA! I didn't even think of that.  :P

Well, as I figured, it's not available anywhere near me, from the sounds of it.  :( There are a few really small farm shops around here, but they don't tend to have anything different from what is available in the supermarkets. I will see if my mom can bring some yellow squash seeds when she comes for a visit in a few weeks and maybe my FIL will plant it with his courgettes and I can have some next year. I've actually never had spaghetti squash, I just see so many recipes for it and thought it would be nice to try.

Or maybe, someone on here will spot some in a shop & could send you some?!  (I'll keep my eyes peeled!)  My BIL sent us some yellow squash from his garden a year or two ago, so it does travel!  I don't have any at the ready, at the moment, Jewlz - or I would send you some.  (We are growing container tubs of brussel sprouts & curly kale this year, but those aren't ready yet.)

I know I've seen them somewhere, but I can't remember where. Sorry. I know that's not much help.  ;D

For some reason, I think I've actually had bottle-neck squash here.  I vaguely remember them being in the Sainsbury's on Wilton Road in Westminster.  Not that that's a help, really.  If I see them around, I will definitely pick some up for you.

BTW, if you know anyone who is going to the US, supposedly you can bring in 2 kilos of fresh produce (not potatoes).  Maybe they can bring some in for you.

Ha, before I opened this thread I was thinking "Rock's organic squash" is my favourite  ;D

My mom served J. summer sqaush when we were in the US and he thought it was fantastic- he'd never seen or heard of it before.
I love summer squash and spaghetti squash and zuchinnis and pattypan squash and acorn squash and butternut squash and pumpkin and marrows and turban and delicata oh and all kinds. However, the most I ever seem to find is acorn, zuchinnis, marrows, butternut, and pumpkins even scouring the farmers markets and my veg box scheme.
I grew squashes in pots when I had a garden.  It worked out really well. Yum!
I haven't planted any of my own veg this year, knew I was moving, didn't know if I'd have a garden (I don't  :( ) and its well too late.  But I may next year throw a pot or two on my steps.  :P   Or maybe the council will have finally let us access the land we've got promised for alloments.
