Right-o, pickle party at Lisa's house.  I'm sure we could bring ourselves to open them!   ;)

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Okay...I feel like I've got shrimp for Forest Gump.

So, what should I be serving up...deviled eggs, tuna salad...what else?

I can't find you a great pickle in the UK but maybe I can help your craving.

Take a cucumber and or onions and slice thinly.
Place in a jar or container with lid.
Add 1 tsp sugar
Add 1/4 tsp salt
Fill jar with White Vinegar
Let sit in fridge over night or for a few hours.

Yummy

I'm going to give that a try this weekend.

Reubens!

Is real Jewish corned beef available in the UK?  Is the Jewish section in North London still Golders Green?  If so, I'm doing some serious shopping next time I'm in London.

Where was that lit_u, in Bentall's or a different shop?  Do they have a food hall again?  They used to have a great selection of American food.   At one time it was the only place you could get peanut butter.

I found some really nice pickles in Tesco the other day.  They're called Mrs Elswood's Haimisha Cucumbers and were in the pickle/condiment area.  There was another Mrs Elswood type of pickle, but the ingredients looked like what you'd expect from a big jar of gherkins. :P  The Haimisha Cucumbers remind me a bit of dill pickles - regardless, they are really nice.  I don't remember how much they cost, which means it could not have been much! ;)

I was in Sainsburys the other night and was on a pickle quest (I was sadly disappointed when I got pickles and realized that they are sweet  :-X ) and the Sainsbury's brand Gherkins in vinegar are as close to anything I have found so far - I read on the lable - and NO SUGAR!  But beware - they are very, umm, vinegary (duh) and strong - but MUCH better than anything that I have found so far.  Also make sure you get the correct ones, many are packaged the same but say 'sweet and sour' or 'dill' in small print and they both have quite a bit of sugar in them I believe.
My head is STILL spinning!

sariann, that's the big flaw with "homemade" pickles here--always the sugar factor. And LisaE, the end of your first post on this thread sounded almost like haiku. To which I'll add:

I miss good pickles--
They seem to escape me now.
What happened to dills?

:)
