Why don't any of the decent pickle companies (such as Vlasic, Mount Olive, Klausen, etc.) sell pickles on any big scale here? Sure, you can order them (and other U.S. food) from sites that sell American food here, so long as you get a second mortgage on your home. :) Miss good pickles!

ROFL, amen to that!

I think Wishstar mentioned that there is a Jewish area in North London that sells proper pickles.  Not much help to those outside of London tho.

Thanks, I try to put this out of my mind and here you all go, having to drag it out in the open again.

Tuna salad just isn't the same.

My DF is the same way (originally from eastern europe, is that why?!) and when he came for his first visit to the USA ,what was he most enamored by? Our pickles! Especially the Vlasic fresh ones. I thought he was just being cute, but I guess it must really be a problem in the UK? I know that most everything he cooks he has to add in some dill pickles somehow (hey, I am not complaining, he can cook as much as he wants, although my first 3-4 visits he did all of it...now he is down to once a week!) so I've never really looked for them when doing our regular shopping. He gets huge jars at Lidl! (Along with his snacking salamis!)

I craved NORMAL pickles while I was pregnant <still love 'em despite not being pregnant - lol>  and my husband just doesnt understand why I dont like them over here. He keeps telling me a pickle is a pickle, so obviously you know that he aint no real pickle eater.  ;D

Amen to that. My DF eats pickled onions, pickled beets, Branston, etc. All ugh as far as I'm concerned. But he hates American dill pickles and calls them witches noses.

Oh, what I wouldn't do for a good one...............

I can't find you a great pickle in the UK but maybe I can help your craving.

Take a cucumber and or onions and slice thinly.
Place in a jar or container with lid.
Add 1 tsp sugar
Add 1/4 tsp salt
Fill jar with White Vinegar
Let sit in fridge over night or for a few hours.

Yummy

My aching heart is set on dill pickles, not sweet ones.

Exactly!! God I miss those. Hmm.... I might have my mom include that in her things to bring.

Rosslyn Deli in Hamspstead sells Vlasic and other pickles. They do mail order if you can't get there.

Hmmm.... do I really want to pay £5? I'll have to think on that one.

I was in Costco yesterday and saw some big jars of pickles...  I dont eat them, so dont know what kind they were, but if you have a membership, you should check into it!

I don't know how much effort you want to put into it, but I make my own pickles (and almost everything else) with an old family recipe.  While the actual recipe calls for a water bath, you could probably make amends to that.  If you are interested, I will give a test run this week when I make my normal batches...if it works, I'lll post the amended detructions.

Our family recipe tastes just like any "typical" American pickle...

I brought a jar of Kosher dills back with me a few trips and a half ago. It sits in my cupboard unopened. It's like the Holy Grail. I have to have a really special occaision to open them. Because I know, once opened, I'll have to consume them all within a week or two. So then I found some Kosher dills over here...and it's the same thing. So I got some of the little ones, and I just can't, just can't open the bottle.

I think I'm up to about five different kinds of dill pickles.
All just sitting in my cupboard.
I can't bring myself to open them.
