The cheese stands alone

I've always wondered about this! Have heard this expression by itself a lot. I guess it must come from the song.   :D

Ha!  I stepped into that Hokey Cokey mess one Christmas when we were playing charades with DH's family (family tradition after Christmas dinner & lots of booze).

I wrote down Hokey Pokey on the little slip of paper to give the next person who was acting out the film/book/song/etc.  Person looked confused.  Much confusion ensued.

Whisper - "Oh you mean Hokey Cokey!"

"What?"

"Hokey Cokey."

"No."

"It's Hokey Cokey, isn't it?"

"No, it isn't."

"What?"

"You don't do the Hokey Pokey over here?"

................................................. .................

And I grew up doing the Hokey Pokey a lot, because we used to roller skate for free at an old timey style roller skating rink that my uncle ran - and a skating session always included the Hokey Pokey!  :)  (and the limbo)

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

I asked DH, just, "Hokey Cokey, or Hokey Pokey?" And said, "What, the one where you go in,out, turn yourself about and all of that?" And I said, "Yeah!", and he said, "Hokey Cokey, of course." Hmmm. I still think it's highly debatable myself.  ;D  [smiley=laugh4.gif]

Yeah, I had to ask my DH about it as well, since I'd never heard of it!  :P

I dislike the versions I didn't grow up with, I don't care which is right. I will however go ahead and teach my children the British versions if they grow up in the UK so they aren't confused and fit in successfully.

The reason I sing the UK versions is along those lines - don't want to confuse the kids I work with and want my daughter to learn the songs of her country.

It just lasts forever.  If I have kids that might be one I let them learn in school.

Being a rebel, I carefully taught my kids the American versions of these things (no "Hokey Pokey" or "Cokey" I might add  :P) I also did that rhyme "Trot trot to Boston, trot trot to Lynn, trot trot to Salem and home, home again!" where you bounce the baby on your knee. I think you create a generational link when you use the rhymes, games, etc. that you learned at your parent's knee. I had no objection to them learning the local versions at school or from friends or from indigenous Grandma, but when I do it I will do it the way I learned!

Obviously you've just not been looking in the right spots.

Ice is usually kept in the freezer sections and we like Harvester which has an unlimited salad bar and free soda refills. And for crispy bacon try streaky bacon and just cook the you know what out of it.

Yeah, I can find the ice....I'm just not used to having to hunt for the 4 tiny bags they have in stock as opposed to the stacks of 20 and 40 lb bags at my local Publix.  Thanks for the tip on Harvester....I have usually stayed away from them but will have to go when I need a soda and salad fix!   ;D
