Last Night of the Proms this year - Sat 11th Sept 2010

Will anyone else be watching this year?  :)

When I first moved over here, DH had me watch this (and also Eurovision) as part of my 'cultural education'.  :P  He meant it as a joke really, but I love to watch it!  Well not all of it, usually just the last quarter or so when they start in toward the patriotic songs.

DH told me about how his dad used to have him & his little brother watch it (when they were little boys), waving little Union Jacks -- primarily for the purpose of teasing & annoying his mum, who refused to watch & went up to bed instead.

Anyway, I like it - the songs, the bobbing up & down, etc.  :)  Although they haven't been doing the sea shanty songs that they used to do, for a few years now.  :(

And the sad part, it just seems to signal the end of British summer to me.  :\\\'(

Oh and I love the song Jerusalem (and I'm not at all religious or in the WI either)!!  Partly because it's William Blake's words, and partly because the song's roots were in social progressivism (women's suffrage, reaction to labour conditions during the Industrial Revolution, etc).  (It's a shame that non-progressive groups also are associated with it.)

Love - love - love the Proms. DD had the opportunity to sing in one a few years back. But I always listen in online -- especially the Last Night. I have the Leeds Festival Chorus at Last Night on my IPod and it's embarrassing because I always sing along to 'Jerusalem'  ;D

This!  :)  I watch Last Night of the Proms every year too and I love it as a way to end the summer.

The Frampton Show (local event) seems to always be the same weekend too and we go to that.  Each time it's had indian summer weather and felt like the last hurrah of the season.

We saw a bit of that repeated on TV, the other night.  Looked like fun!  I asked DH if he would have liked to go & he wasn't sure, until they brought the Cyberman out - lol!  He's just an overgrown kid really.  ;)

So that's that now...British summer is over now.  :\\\'(  Next up, Christmas!  :P

Watched it on tv last night and LOVED it.  Especially the stirring finale, it made my heart do funny things.
And DH says we can definitely support our local symphony when we're back "home".  Yay!!!   :)

we love watching it in our house.  It's a fun combination of silliness and patriotism in a world that doesn't always value those.  I love classical music anyway though and play the violin, so I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff.

There are few events I love as much as the Proms. And the Dr Who one was amazing! You're so lucky! I got a bit sniffly a few times, just watching the kids (and adults!) having such a wonderful time while listening to the gorgeous music. Loved it.

I hear Em's friend Jane turned up to the Last Night wearing a Girl Guide uniform, ca. 1910! Hope there's some pictures of that.
