Dog Fouling!
« on: September 13, 2010, 01:35:43 PM »
Our neighbors have a puppy that "goes" all over the shared garden.  There was dog excrement on the sidewalk for several days...this happened twice and was only removed both times from someone (that was visiting her) stepping in it.  DH has asked the owner of the dog on 2 separate occasions to clean the poo up.  One time she said "Oh I will...I didn't know that he had gone in your side of the yard."  First off, this was AFTER there was poo on the sidewalk for 3 days (that she has to walk past to get to her door)...I guess she didn't know about that either.   ::) And second, it is a SHARED garden...we don't have a "side".  Anyway, the second time, he specifically pointed out one pile and she went and picked that one pile up.  There are literally 30+ piles of dog poo in the small yard.  She's had the dog for about 3-4 weeks (maybe longer?) and has NEVER cleaned any of it up.  We have a 6-year-old that can't even walk, much less play in the yard because it's everywhere and I've now given up on trying to use the clothes line because there's so much everywhere.

Anyway, I filled out some kind of complaint thingy with the local council...I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience with dealing with them?  Will they actually do anything about it?  I called the letting agency they rent from and was referred to the landlord.  He used to be our landlord and he's useless so I'm really at a loss for what to do if the council doesn't act on this.  My only other option is cleaning it up myself...and if that happens...it will be put through her letterbox.   >:(

Hopefully we're moving soon and even considered giving up our £400 bond by not giving a 30 day notice just so we can get away from the dog poo...well, that and the daily waft of weed we have to endure even though they've already been reported to the police and nothing has changed.

I don't have any official advice, but I did used to live in a two story house that was split into two apartments, and we shared the garden out back.  The people downstairs had a dog that they never cleaned up after.  We liked to use the garden like anyone would, to barbecue or sit outside and read, but it would get to be unbearable.  We'd asked them a million times to clean it up, talked to the landlord, everything... but they were stoners like your neighbor and always "forgot".

We started cleaning it up and left it in a bucket at their front door each time we did.  Eventually, they got the hint and stopped "forgetting".

How terrible!  What if you contacted YOUR landlord, since you share the yard, and it's your property as well, and tell him/her that it's a health and safety issue?  Take pictures if you have to and show that you're not exaggerating.

If you had a rodent problem in your house leaving poop everywhere, you'd call the landlord to get an exterminator to fix the problem, since it's a health issue.  I wonder if it could be seen the same way for your external property...

Well I'm not sure if the council got in touch with them or not...but the other day she had some guy (a friend of hers) cleaning some of it up.  Then my BIL came over and was playing with DD in the yard...he yelled for her to clean it up (not very nicely) and then got a bag and picked some of it up and slung it right in front of her door.   ;D

We're moving next Friday so I'm not too concerned about it since it won't be my problem...it is pretty pathetic though.

I feel your pain....

It is only in recent years that local authorities have started to clamp down and try and train UK dog owners to pick up the poop after their dogs. Prior to that,it was perfectly acceptable for your dog to drop and just walk on. Can you believe it?

Anyway,,,those irresponsible dog owners are slowly getting the message.

I'd advise you visit your local diy store and obtain a tin of strong disinfectatn called "Jeyes fluid". Its pretty potent stuff and you just mix a little with a bucket of hot water and wash the area down. It will definitely kill any germs but the bonus is,it leaves a very strong fresh smell which will give the hint to your neighbours AND discourage further pooping.

I can't get use to the fact of someone having to squat down and pick up hot 'poop' fresh out of the dog. Sorry for being grafic(sp).  So repulsive and dirty......I know you can get those long handle shovels that is more civilized but who wants to carry one of those around all day??

Gross, but part of the responsibility of owning a dog.  Also not as gross as someone unexpectedly stepping in fresh dog poop.

A good way for you to find who your true friends are. ;D
