Italian Hot Sausage
« on: September 15, 2010, 09:15:13 AM »
I am so disappointed that I cannot find any Italian hot sausage in this country. I am instead stuck with weird tasting grey British sausage. These people don't know what they are missing!!!!!!

I decided that I would get some pork mince and make it myself. I found a recipe online and made it. It actually turned out quite well. I wasn't able to have the sausage in links but for toppings on pizza or hot sausage soup..it worked out really well.

Does anyone know where this sausage can be bought? Or will I be stuck making it the rest of my life?

You don't say where you are so this may or may not be helpful. In London, the Waitrose meat counter in my neighborhood occasionally as Italian sausage. Also, Selfridges and Whole Foods both sell Italian sausage.

Well, apparently we already have an estimated 470 different types of sausage in the UK, so I don't think the British people realise there is anything to miss :P.

What about small delis or international food shops? Maybe they'll have them there.

Alas, I’ve looked but I haven’t found Italian sausages with thicker mince. The meat in sausages here tends to be ground more finely, which makes them more like a paste and though tasty, it's not quite the same.

But I have found suitable alternatives. If you’re in London, Camisa on Old Compton Street in Soho has very good sausages in different varieties and Gazzano & Sons on Faringdon Road in Clerkenwell also has decent ones. Lina Stores on Brewer Street in Soho is another option.

Supposedly, the food hall in Harvey Nichols has an Italian sausage with a thicker mince but I’ve never tried them.

This summer I went to a BBQ at a friend’s and someone brought some South African sausages and they were very good. I’m not sure what they are called but there’s a deli in Stratford that sells them.

I would look at small delis. I found some at a deli in the city centre, but they stopped carrying it. I have never seen them at any of the grocery stores here.

I have a bag of penzey's italian sausage seasoning (i stock up when I'm in the states, and Penzey's will ship to the UK) that I use with normal pork mince, it is very good and worth the bother of getting and can be made hot by adding chili flakes. I always preferred patties to links so it works out fine for me.

Would you mind sharing the recipe?   :)

I have also missed this, especially for my stuffing at thanksgiving time. I have made my own too. Last year someone recommended sainsbury's sicilian style sausage- it is very good and right consistancy, just not hot. I add some cayene pepper to help with that though

Yes, HG beat me to it, but the link isn't showing the product.  I found another one:

http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/sainsburys-price-comparison/Sausages_And_Burgers/Sainsburys_Taste_the_Difference_Sicilian_Style_Sausage_6_per_pack_400g.html

It has the fennel seed in it - I just add red pepper flakes (or you could add cayenne like what HG said).

Except (probably because it's on offer now) when I last went to Sainsburys (last week), there was nary a pack of the Sicilian Style Sausage on the shelf.  Ahhh - Sainsburys - some things never change...like their poor stock management...you know you can always count on them for that.  ;) :D

I always have a giggle when people post about sausages! My British mother always complained about not being able to find proper British sausages in the US, so she wound up making her own too. She thought the Americans didn't know what they were missing!  ;D

I've been missing Italian sausage too, H! We should go on an adventure one day to some of these places to track some down. :)
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!
