Good destinations for 2-3 day trips?
« on: October 24, 2010, 05:40:13 PM »
I'm trying to look into places that are easy to get to for the weekend or a 3 day trip getaway from London whether it be by train or plane. I found a good deal for a train to Edinburgh for 2 nights which I think would be easy just for a weekend getaway. Also, Prague is very high on my list. Is two nights/3 days enough time there in terms of  traveling there and seeing the city? Vienna? Bordeaux?

I'm loving this! I can't believe I have the opportunity to go to these places possibly just for the weekend! I just want to figure out what is realistic taking time into consideration. If anyone has the experience of going to some of these places or other ideas of weekend getaways from London, I'd love your feedback!

I'd totally go for Edinburgh. Lovely city for a weekend break. Same goes for York.

Whole new world for a Southern gardener, but I'm very happy.

Barcelona is an easy flight from London and it is a fantastic city. Brussels is also easy to get to via Eurostar.

Edinburgh is lovely, and a weekend there would certainly be well spent.  When I went to Prague I was only there for 2 nights/3 days and I saw enough of what I wanted to see to be satisfied, so that would probably be worthwhile too.  Although, I did not fly there (got a train from Berlin) so I'm not sure what the situation is with the airport.

To add to that, Salzburg would be a great weekend destination as well.  I loooooved it there!  :)

Where are you looking up weekend breaks? We will be in Leeds for thanksgiving and we want to get away Fri-Sun somewhere and I would love to know where you are looking.

I do love York but been there done that a few times...Scotland is on my list as well and I know people here rave about it.

Wow! Thanks for your suggestions guys!! We are definitely going to book a trip to Edinburgh, probably for Thanksgiving weekend. We are torn between taking the train there because I heard it's soooo beautiful along the coast or flying because it is quicker.

I will get back to you with the website for the weekend breaks. I can't remember now and I'm at work!  ;)

I will look into Salzburg too! I recommend Munich to people too. I don't know if any of you have been there but I LOVE it and it would just be a couple hour plane flight away.

Bruges and Amsterdam are two great cities for weekend breaks, they're only an hour or so away and the town centres are compact so you can walk around. I think cologne is great for this as well :)

Prague is really nice for a quick trip, especially if you like classical music.  I was amazed at the number of free concerts all over the city.

I'm from Edinburgh so would totally agree that it's a great destination for a long weekend  :)  If time isn't an issue then i would go by train.  The scenery on the way is excellent and then when you arrive/depart you are smack bang in the city centre.  Getting to and from the airport was always a pain in the neck for me.

Prague is lovely!

Dublin, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Berlin. Any major European city is good for a quick weekend break, IME. Where do the carriers fly in relation to the airports near you?
