Can someone clue me in about the laundry?
« on: October 27, 2010, 02:12:35 PM »
Ok, I know this is a picky little thing, but it's driving me crazy!
I have one of those washer/dryer combo machines.  I'm proud to say, I have finally figured out how to program it.  But my clothes are so wrinkled.  I never iron anything in the states, but I have to iron all DH's pants and most of our cotton shirts now.  And I hate to iron. What am I doing wrong? javascript:void(0);

Nothing.  Combo washer and dryers suck like that.  It does help is after the wash you take out all the clothes and shake them, but it is a condenser dryer as opposed to an air vented type dryer so you will never get the same results.

We had one and pretty much gave up on the dryer function.  I would hang things outside if the weather was OK -- otherwise it was hang the clothes over the bath and the dreaded festooning of sheets, etc. over doors.

I hate the washer/dryers here. I remember using the dry function for the first time and my clothes came out steaming. I scalded my hands but the clothes were all very much damp. I will never ever use that function again.  >:(

I agree the washer/dryer combos here are kind of sucktastic :-/ but generally it helps if you take out half of the clothes you washed, "dry" them and then "dry" the other half. Most times the washing capacity is double or more the "drying" capacity.

Good luck!

I don't think its great to use the combo machines- or any condensor dryer at all- Even using 1/2 loads I find it doesn't work great to use my dryer function.  My flat usually gets covered in airers- I take my clothes out of the machine, shake them out and smooth them out as best I can, then put them on the airers/over door frames/backs of chairs/on radiators.  Find I don't have to iron much then.

I'd love a vented dryer, but no room for that and I don't have an outside area, so I'm pretty SOL for hanging outside.

So anyone popping into my flat gets to see my underpants.

You have a few kids, right?  That will get your house coated in clothes quickly!

Yeah, the combos suck.  We use drying racks, too.

If anything is wrinkled, I find taking it into the bathroom with me when I have a shower helps, as the steam from the shower gets out some of the wrinkles.  After that point, I don't care!

Same.  I had no qualms with the washer function.  But the dryer part?  Even at half a load, it was a cruel joke.  My clothes dried much better on airers (no outside option for us) than in the "dryer" -- which was really just a steamer/wrinkler.  Things came out very, very hot and very, very wrinkled. Even though the clothes weren't dry, the wrinkles were somehow already baked in.

We've got a separate condenser dryer now, and while it takes a little longer than our vented dryer back in the US, it gets the job done and no baked-in wrinkles.  I feel compelled to go give that thing a kiss right now.

This is pretty much my attitude about ironing too!  ;D I don't iron, ever. My husband does but he has to because of his uniform. He actually enjoys doing it though so it's not much of a chore for him.

I've been wanting to get one of these installed for ages. http://www.pulleymaid.com/Classic_Clothes_Airer.htm

I've been looking into getting a combo dryer as I now do laundry about 2-3 times a week but they don't seem very good.

Yup, that's what we had over the bath!! It worked pretty well.  We did have to replace the rope once when it got frayed.  Put t-shirts and things over the wooden slats, hook undies off the ends of the slats, hang shirts on hangers and hook through the metal part -- you can get a lot on there!  Only it gets kinda heavy hauling it up again  :P

Oooh, I've wanted one of those since I first saw it in a house 2 years ago.  Don't think my landlord would let me install one though  :-\\\\

Don't do it.  The dryer function on our combo machine worked (or didn't work) exactly as described in this thread.  It was worse than drying stuff on the radiators.

I have a washer/dryer combo as well. As everyone has said, the drying feature really doesn't work. I usually do a load and use the dryer for about 40 minutes, then pull out the clothes while they're still warm (but obviously still damp) and hang them to finish drying. Some of our stuff is still a bit wrinkled, but it's not too bad.
