Visa sent and I'm not there...
« on: November 08, 2010, 09:44:16 PM »
Help!

I was caught off-guard by the same-day turn-around of my Visa by the New York Consulate.  They are shipping my passport and Visa back to me by UPS next-day air with signature required.  I'm not home in Michigan however.  I'm in San Antonio Texas visiting my children and grandchildren (before moving to the UK).  I won't be home until Saturday.

Does anyone have any idea what will happen when they try to deliver and I'm not available?  Is this going to mess up my Visa?  I've no clue where to even start working on this problem.  They gave me a tracking number from UPS, so the package is no longer at the consulate, so calling them won't help.  I guess I could try to find a number for UPS?

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of situation?

Call UPS. They will probably attempt redelivery and then hold the package for X days until giving up and returning it. I'm sure you can call and tell them to hold it for you until a certain date then pick it up from their warehouse.

I was staying with my son when they sent mine to his address and my son signed for it as I was not at home.......don't know if you could have someone sign for it but in the past I know that I had signed for many packages for neighbors who were not at home...maybe different for this package...anyway I agree that maybe you can call UPS and explain to them and they will hold it for you to pick up when u get home.......Good Luck!!!!!

Thanks all.  I contacted UPS and asked them to deliver to my apartment complex's office.  I also called the office and asked them to put a note on the door saying that the package should be delivered to the office.  I just checked UPS tracking and my visa has been signed for by office personnel.  I'm thinking that my application set some sort of land speed record.

Friday 5PM EST - mailed overnight from Michigan to the NY consulate.
Monday 11AM EST - Received Email acknowledging receipt
Monday 3PM EST - Received Email notifying that Visa had been issued
Tuesday 11AM EST - Visa arrived

Thanks ever so much to everyone on this wonderful site.  You all made this process so much easier and took the fear of the unknown out of the situation.  I look forward to continued participation as a yankmanc living in Manchester starting the middle of December.
