Fairly Specific Spouse Finance questions
« on: November 09, 2010, 05:07:54 AM »
Hello all,

My fiance and I are finally making plans for my move to Northern Ireland this coming summer (hopefully) and are starting to think we've hit a pretty major snag in the finances department.

I am graduating with my BA from Catholic University in DC in May.  He is currently at Queen's University Belfast working on an mphil, which is unfunded.  He demonstrates/acts as a teaching assistant part-time, while I have a part-time job at college as well, but with cost of living in DC added with my student loan payments which have already begun, I don't have much to put aside.

He has been saving money for the past four years to put aside for the eventual move/wedding/house buying/etc.  My savings are fairly close to nil.  He has always been on DLA due to chronic Asthma.  He was put on DLA for life as a child.

In June/July of 2011, we were hoping to get legally married in the States in order for me to gain my spouse visa and hopefully line up a few job prospects before making the move.  He will not be graduating until the following December, therefore will not be working full-time yet.

If he has a healthy amount of savings, and I plan to actively look for a job once I get the spouse visa...does anyone think we should  be concerned that immigration won't believe that he can support me in the transition period?  I'm quite worried that they'll see his student status and lack of full-time employment and assume that he would not be able to support me until I find a job.  If that's a case, we need to start seriously considering him leaving school and looking for full-time work sooner rather than later.

Thanks for any advice.  This issue could be the deciding factor between if I move over in June/July or if I have to wait until December/January.  We have been planning on my move immediately after graduation for four years now...so the thought of adding another half a year onto that is really killing me.  :(

If he has savings and you work out a budget showing that it will support you....and have potential jobs..you should be fine.

Just so you know, his DLA for life that you speak about, might not be for life. All exisiting claiments of DLA will now be required to have medicals.

The government estimate that 1 in 5 of the disabled claiments are able to work full time and will pass the medical.

HG, thanks, this is great news.  I think he would be able to support me off of savings for quite a few months if necessary.

Peter, He was required to get a medical a few months ago to keep the DLA, and they told him the same thing.  Thanks for the heads up, though.
