Who are the prudes about sex- the British or the Americans?
« on: December 06, 2010, 07:51:48 PM »
For some reason many Americans are convinced that the British (the English in particular) are very prudish about sex. I have a hunch it's in fact the Americans who are prudish ones  about sex. What is your opinion?

Depends on the person and not nationality. I have friends in the UK who wont even say the word 'sex.' I tease them about it sometimes, to make them blush :P Again, just with the people I find myself with here in London, they don't seem very open about sex whereas my friends in the US would talk about it with anyone anytime  ::) [smiley=laugh4.gif] Depends on your group of friends.

When it comes to the media, the Americans are the prudes.

I agree with sweetpeach about the media in America......I have seen things on the telly here that they would not dare show on American telly with the exception of the pay channels and I also agree with rynn_aka_rae that it depends on the person not the nationality.....I know I am not prudish about it   :)

the weird thing is Americans have no problem with horrific violence on tv, yet have a meltdown  over anything sexual- particularly nudity.

Remember the reaction to Janet jackson's exposed nipple? In contrast, topless ladies have been on English tv since Monty Python...

And don't forget Benny Hill (that programme of sophisticated British comedy), or the Page 3 girls, well or pretty much any city centre on a Friday or Saturday night...  ;) :P

When I first moved here I was pleasantly surprised to see Will and Grace shown in the middle  of the day.

Okay I'm British so excuse my ignorance but why wouldn't Will & Grace be shown in the middle of the day?  I've caught a few episodes and didn't catch any sex scenes - or was I just (un)lucky?

Because it has homosexual characters - and during the day children could be watching  :o :o :o :o :o

I don't recall it ever being on before 9PM in America.

Which brings up the point that the UK has a much more relaxed attitude toward "alternative sexuality" than the US.

The most obvious example is that same sex unions are legal all over the UK.

Oh right.  My guess is that most children either wouldn't pick that up or just wouldn't care!

Yep, and there were even times when boys kissed boys and girls kissed girls, which as everyone knows destroys the moral fibre of children and recruits them to be gay! Of course, the mindless violence of action shows and cartoons and explicit heterosexual sex of daytime soap operas aren't a problem.   ::)

I should have added that my comment about the UK being more relaxed about sexuality was a generalisation.

There are homophobic (and racist) people in the UK, just as there are in the US.

As people have been saying, it's all down to individuals.

When did you move here?

Will and Grace was a prime time show unitl 2006 so, depending on when it began syndication it may have only been seen in it's regular nightime slot anyway.
