Passport control Dublin - Holyhead
« on: December 13, 2010, 07:41:42 PM »
Hi all
I have booked a ferry from Dublin back to the UK (Holyhead) and am curious about passport control.  Do you have to show your passport in both Dublin and Holyhead or just leaving Dublin? Just wondering as I need to book a bus from Holyhead and want to allow myself plenty of time if there is.
Thanks for your help!

We went Holyhead Dublin on the ferry in 2009 but we were in the car, they had immigration control officer on foot in Ireland and as we went past in the car the man asked if everyone was a UK citizen. He checked passports of anyone who said no, I think he was stamping them. Coming to UK from Ireland, no one even asked for passports or nationality.

That's odd that there's someone asking for passports in Ireland, there is supposed to be no border controls as the EU allows for the free movement of people to and from countries inside the EU... and it's not as if an illegal immigrant has a national insurance number or the right of abode, so border controls work differently.

This has nothing to do with the EU and 100% to do with the CTA. The Common Travel Area operates between the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Currently Ireland will check air travellers but not Ferry traffic from the UK unless it is a specific operation check:

In Ireland

In 1997, Ireland changed its immigration legislation to allow immigration officers to examine (i.e. request identity documents from) travellers arriving in the state from elsewhere in the Common Travel Area and to refuse them permission to land if they are not entitled to enter.[2] Although this is stated to apply only to people other than Irish and British citizens, both of the latter groups are effectively covered as they may be required to produce identity documents to prove that they are entitled to the Common Travel Area arrangements. Although it is difficult to be exact about the nature of current border checks fixed controls are only maintained at ports and airports[28] while targeted controls are conducted along the land border in what are referred to as "intelligence driven operations".[29] All passengers arriving in Ireland from the United Kingdom by air now pass through Irish border controls, administered by the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB). While British citizens are not required to be in possession of a valid travel document as a condition of entry to Ireland, they are required to satisfy immigration officials of their nationality.

There are NO checks when going from Ireland to the UK commonly known as the 'Dublin Loophole'.

Thanks for your help everyone.  I'll just assume it takes the same amount of time to disembark a normal ferry as there is no passport checking. Thanks again!
