We live on a council estate outside Manchester, so certainly not a representative sample here of all of England, but the perception I have found is that Americans are soft, whiny and overly emotional...oh yeah, and fat. I'm sure opinions vary.

Good thing you're not some internet troll just stirring up trouble, huh?  Or would you really like to have a serious discussion about stereotypes?  One which might include stereotypes of people who live on council estates outside of Manchester?  I'm sure opinions of those people vary, too.

Well this one...

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

I should note that most of the people I come in contact with have never met an American. The stereotypes they have come from American telly.

Yeah, why can't we be upbeat and cheerful like the British?

To be perfectly honest I don't see the point of this thread at all. All I see the OP doing is making comments to upset and stir people up. :-\\\\

Aw, I think it's a little funny, actually. I read it and think, "well, they don't get us, but we get us, so it's all good..."  :P

No need to get upset and stirred up. :)

At first glance, I thoght she wrote "You guys are a bunch of right WINGERS" not Whingers, I didn't see the problem
THAT is why we left the U.S., all the Right-Wingers
(Sorry, inside political jibe)
(I asked my British wife once if the UK celebrated any holiday around the time of Thanksgiving in the us, she told me that, yes, it's called, "Phew, all those puritans are gone, lets have a pint day")

My DH says the same thing if he reads this board, and i always say to him just wait until we move to the US and you'll understand.

I tell my husband the same thing. Sometimes I can't wait until we move back the the US so he can see what being an expat is like. He's plenty sympathetic, but I know he doesn't get exactly why things like ranch dressing and the food network are so important to me.

And then I can finally show him how great some other things are, like light switches in the bathroom, dryers and central air.
My blog's had a makeover: aye2zed.blogspot.com (An American Take on Life in Britain)
