Los Angeles to Glasgow
« on: January 08, 2011, 08:33:28 PM »
We met 7 years ago online, and though we've lost contact a couple of times in the past, we've finally decided to make the leap of faith.  We applied for the Fiancee visa and got confirmation that the LA office reached it November 30th 2010... we're so close we can taste it!!

He's always lived in Scotland, born and raised.  His family all live fairly close and they all have a powerful bond.
I was born in Germany to American parents and moved all over the states.  I've never called any one place home really, and I have no family left other than one Great Uncle.

We have a lot of differences, but those differences are only on the surface.  Our similarities go deep to the bone.  We are the same, he and I... and for that I'm giving up my life in the States to be with him. I wouldnt have it any other way. I've always loved this man.

I may miss home from time to time, but I don't have many people left to miss.  My emotional attachment is to the FOOD of America!!  Having grown up for some time in Arkansas, it's the BBQ ribs, okra and fried green tomatoes I'll miss the most.  Biscuits and Gravy get me funny looks over in the UK for the mere mention of the name!

We're new to the site, and we can't wait to get going!

Welcome!

You sound more Southern than someone from Los Angeles LOL with the talk of certain food items.  I am Southern, and I LOVE biscuits & gravy, so I make my own here, since it is not available anywhere. Happy to hear your heading toward your new life with the one you love.  The UK is very different, but it is about being happy, not about where you live.

Welcome to the Boards,
Bless of Luck on all you about to do.

I can't claim to be more than half southern...
Mom was from Arkansas and Dad was from New York - I'm a born contradiction... born in Germany of all places! I guess it can be said I have a taste for food from all over the world.  As of this past July, one of my new favorite dishes would be Haggis!  I doubt it would go well with biscuits and gravy though.  :P

Thanks for the warm welcome!! I can't wait for that Visa to get here! ;D

I'm actually going to be a little outside of Glasgow as well - in a town called Bellshill!!

As for the cold - I've lived in Los Angeles for the past 9 years now. I'm in short sleeves today and yesterday and I'm tempted to put down the convertable top. I have NO idea how I'm going to cope once I get there! I'm cold in 50 degrees!!

You'll be about a mile away from me!  My BF works in Bellshill!  :D

Not to be a downer but I can almost guarantee you're going to get sick.  :-[ When I came here the first time I was living in Georgia and had been there for the winter and when I came here I got so ill I was in bed for a week and I came in their summer. I wish you all the best and maybe all of us "near Glasgow" people can get together sometime. That would be fun!

I hear ya girl!  I'm currently in OC and moving to Manchester and I'm such a wuss that I'm even a bit chilly today and it's 75!!  I plan to hit up Kohls and buy LOTS of sweaters and warm stuff once the "after winter" sales hit and it's all on clearance.  I think we're going to be needing some major additions to our wardrobe.
Good luck with the visa and the move (and the haggis... I'm not sure I'd have the fortitude to even try it)

I know what you mean! I'm wearing a jacket today and don't have the courage to put down the top on my convertible!  I like your Kohls idea though... might have to do that myself.  I'm actually on the LA/OC border myself, I think there's a Kohls in Seal Beach, that would be the closest one to me.  Might have to take a trip.  Any idea when the sale starts? I may be out of here any day now!!

As for Haggis, how do you know you won't like it if you don't try it? Believe me, I was nervous at first myself, but I've been craving it again since August now and I can't WAIT to get back to Scotland! I'm going to request that as my first dinner home!
