Anyone know of a "mint.com" that works with UK banks?
« on: January 22, 2011, 09:14:41 AM »
I really need to get a handle on our budget.  I have been sticking my head in the sand for way too long. I got all excited when I read about mint.com on another forum I belong to, but it won't connect to UK banks.  Anyone use anything like it in the UK? (It is a free software package that allows you track what categories you spend in).

Hi CAadventuress,

This is an industry I'm involved in and previously I worked at Intuit who make the Quicken software that's very well known throughout the US. Quicken and Microsoft Money were the big players in the market, and they've decided to not develop any further for the UK market. However, if you were to get a hold of the last UK versions, which most likely will be 'certified' for use on Windows XP - you could run those to do your home accounting/personal finance tracking.

There are a few makers of software in the UK that do similar products, but aren't really widely known of - perhaps not so effective marketing? or just the general laziness of the UK population to know where their money is?!!
An example is
http://www.banktree.co.uk/

Then there's 'cloud' based services
http://www.moneydashboard.com/

There's plenty more out there, youll need to have a look and compare and ask questions as to if they'll do what you want them to do

Be advised, not all banks in the UK even offer an option to download financial statements - Egg being an Internet Bank to my knowledge still don't provide downloadable statements to import into Quicken or Money or Excel. Ludicrous! (I had an account with them for 5+ years and often asked/chased for it - but they didn't, so I closed it off 2 years ago, so maybe they do now!)

Have a look at what your bank offers in terms of this, or if they have their own built in money/account statement consolidator - something like Egg money manager, which I think just connects to other accounts you have to give you the balance.

The USA was and is far ahead of the game for banking than the UK for things like this for consumers.

Drop me a PM if you'd like to know a little more about the Quicken side of things as well as an overview of what you could do or might want to know of and I'll help out.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I'm pretty sure "yodlee" is the company that did the back end programming for Mint. They have a UK presence, so if you google them, you should be able to find a Mint equivalent.

Belated thank you for all the ideas.  I brought them to the hubs, who is much more tech (and financially!) savvy than I am.  He ended up choosing iBank because it was one of the few that would take info from both our US and UK HSBC account statements.  Having looked it over, it is definitely not as user friendly as mint.com, but it does what we needed - showed us we are living beyond our means, and need to get on a budget!  That's what I was afraid of......

I'd definitely suggest checking out Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert website then.

I will check that out.
This is a bit of an odd year though -not sure what advice would apply to our situation.  But I will definitely need some sort of plan once we return to the US in August.

We are only in the UK for one year.  We had to give up my salary (over half our usual income) to be here, so my goal was to spend every last dime we made traveling in Europe, but not build up debt.  So we are breaking a lot of the rules - not saving for an emergency or retirement during this year.

At least now I know what our travel budget is.  Even if I don't like it!

Yodlee offer their own online service at http://moneycenter.yodlee.com. I have used it for 4 years, first in the US and then in the UK - it's absolutely brilliant, pulls the data from all of my bank accounts, credit cards, investments, airline miles, etc. in both countries and displays all the data in one place. The user interface may not be quite as slick as Mint but it is just as functional if not more so in my experience. It supports all of the main UK financial institutions, as well as some smaller ones.

I don't normally like to flog commercial products but this one is a huge time saver for me and beats any competitor I've tried! I am curious to try some of the other services mentioned in this post though.

ETA: After visiting http://www.moneydashboard.com which was mentioned above, it looks like Yodlee is also the back end behind that service.
